Am I the only one to see this as a non story. TCAS does exactly what it is supposed to do, air traffic does exactly what it is supposed to do and the pilots do what they have been told.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Yes and no.  There was clearly a violation committed here, as those aircraft should have never came within miles of each other.  However, the media is reporting every incident, slip up, or whatever you will call it, that aviation has had recently.

Because it is being investigated, it becomes public knowledge.  All you have to do is go to the NTSB website.  That is why a lot of these incidents don't make headlines until weeks later, takes time to update the site.

Mmm, I sat on my hands (ouch!) for a few hours and had a think.

Yes and no*. Certainly a TCAS RA in the big scheme of things is a non event. However the circumstance of this one are of note - getting a descending RA at that height, although probably not dangerous as such, would be very "uncomfortable" (event though most are resolved in a couple of hundred feet), and, due to the configuration, weight, and power settings of the aircraft on departure, quite a manoeuvre - certain to scare the proverbial out of your pax within 30 seconds of takeoff!

I think the United captain summed it up perfectly to the controller:

"We need to have a talk"...

*unintentionally quoting Davysims! ;D
