Joined the ANR club- Bose Aviation Headset X!

Didn't really need a new headset right now, certainly not one of the most expensive ones out there...but I got a chance to get a huge discount and pay it off a little at a time (one of the co.'s I work for is a Bose contractor).

Can't wait to try it out in a plane, but so far I am impressed. Makes my old Telex 3000 look and feel like something from the '30s, LOL.

It looks a little flimsy, but is not. Very light, snug but comfy. And the ANR does its magic even in normal environments (completely kills the street noise when inside the loft).

I'm jealous.    I once got to try a Bose ANR for a short trip in an Archer, and they had to pry it out of my hands once we landed.  You never realize just how much noise there is until you can turn it off.

How well does it work with the noise canceling turned off? I have some Lightspeeds, and sometimes I forget to put in new batteries on long trips.

According to the manual, it will still work fine in passive mode, even if the batteries fail. Does the Lightspeed unit actually not work at all without battery power?

No, it actually works great, but it looks like the ear pads are much bigger than the Bose, so I was just wondering.

Oh- i thought you were asking if the mic and headphones function without battery power.
Obviously, the noise attenuation without the ANR system active is lower... but it's still pretty good. Can't find the specs on attenuation in passive mode for the X, but it's probably not quite as good as headsets with bigger ear cups and tighter fit. Without even comparing them in flight, I'd wager that the passive attenuation is as good as, if not better, than my Telex 3000.

But the comparisons I've read suggest that compared to, say, the Zulu, which also has Bluetooth, etc (the X doesn't even have an audio input), the X really only gives you more comfort for the extra money. Bose did score slightly higher in intelligibility, but for a lot of people, if it attenuates as much and has extras like Bluetooth, at a lower price, then  it's a better deal.

I'm paying only a little less, with the discount, for the Bose as I would for the Lightspeed... but I can't get a Lightspeed on a casual payment plan.

Mine are a couple years old, Lightspeed 3G and I absolutely love them. Great sound quality, comfortable fit, and audio input. Don't remember how much they cost, though.

LOL, no, not in a power plane, which is what I got them for. My old set is OK, but at this point I need to try harder to protect my hearing, regardless of how rarely I fly power... the ANR will do that for me. It really does make a huge difference!

I don't think I'll use them in the glider, although I might try it. Been thinking, actually, about modding an old lightweight theater-comm headset I have so I can use it in the glider (just needs different connectors put on)... I have an adaptor for the handheld, and a PTT, which would be cool... hard to transmit with a handheld when you're on base holding half-spoilers.

Speaking of which, is it gliding season already? I'm starting to feel a little if you know what I mean.
