What aircraft out there...

Postby Mtns2Skies » Sun Oct 18, 2009 5:47 pm

To start, no I dont want these aircraft for the flightsim, I'm just curious. So what aircraft have low wing, Fixed gear, constant speed prop and are non-composite(i.e. Cirrus's)? I already know 1/3 of Beech Musketeers, the TB10, and Piper 235/236's do. What else? thanks!

Cessna 182 and 206s I believe.  Plus I think some of the early Cessna 210s were fixed gear.

Grumman has a couple I think.

Nope Grummans have fixed pitch... Okay a better question, why is it that so few low-wing aircraft have fixed gear and a CS prop? Any theories?

Since the idea of better performance from a CS prop conflicts with fixed gear..I think a better question would be :

The answer is of course, that their "tuck big sticks into the belly", retractable system never got the bugs worked out of it.
That and the fact that most fixed gear Cessnas with equivalent horsepower will outperform the 'gear up' competition.

Retractable gear aircraft are inherently complex. There is a saying in aviation, "It is not a question of if a pilot will land gear up, but when." The also add weight, which usually outweighs whatever aerodynamic drag you save on small, slow aircraft. CS props don't really add a whole lot of performance, mainly they are more efficient.

Actually they add quite a bit of performance across the flight profile. Granted, up against a fixed-pitch cruise-prop, the best they can hope for is coming within a few knots of delivering top-speed.. but up against that cruise-prop they out perform it substancially during a takeoff and climb... and out perform all other props during all parts of a flight.

That and the fact that most fixed gear Cessnas with equivalent horsepower will outperform the 'gear up' competition.

I've found that to be true also
