6th Flight

Postby Ravang » Thu Sep 04, 2008 8:58 pm

Had my sixth lesson after a few weeks break do to school, and now hurricanes. :P Had a very interesting takeoff, about 3/4 of the way down the runway and 100ft' in the air both of the C150's doors popped open. We got them shut a few minutes later after climbing too 1100ft' and exiting the pattern. Didn't have to worry about anything falling out because the wind pushed the doors most of the way closed. After that we did some steep turns getting much better only lost about 100ft' of altitude during two turns, one to the left, and on to the right. Also did some very, very slow flight 42 mph, the plane stalls at 40 mph, managed to turn without stalling as well. ;D Then we headed back to the airport to do a few touch and goes, I need a little work on my flare, flaring to high, but I've got the airspeed, altitude, radios, and pattern distance down pat. Then the hardest part came, trying to fit the C150 in a hanger with a 90% built P-51 in there. :P

Sounds like you're doing well!  8-)

Good reaction to the door thing- NEVER futz with doors or anything like that while climbing out; many people have died because of that, but a door ajar on a 150 never killed anybody. I flew a 172 for a few hours once with the right door ajar; didn't even notice until I was securing the plane after landing. ;D

Slow flight is cool, innit? especially in a 150; they can go very slowly if you handle them right, and will still be very obedient when turning.

The only reason we noticed the doors had come open was because my instructor had his arm on the door and it swung open... :P The breeze did feel good after sitting in the sun waiting to takeoff. ;)
