RIAT Cancelled Tomorrow

Postby igs942 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 2:33 pm

Just heard on the BBC news that they have cancelled RIAT for Saturday due to the crap weather recently. No news on Sunday yet.

Wow.
The biggest call to make is sunday. If they cancel then they will either have to hold the show later in the year and hope to re-organise it, with the displaying and static pilots/ Air forces. Or it could go down as the biggest mess for an airshow.
I could see there being no RIAT this year.

[quote]AIR TATTOO CANCELLED SATURDAY

Due to the unusually heavy rainfall during the past 72 hours, a decision has been made by the organisers of the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire to cancel the airshow on Saturday, July 12.

The cancellation of the airshow on Saturday follows a sustained period of heavy rainfall that has resulted in waterlogged conditions not only in the public car parks but also on the airfield itself. The decision was taken following consultation with the police and other safety services.

Air Tattoo Director Tim Prince said it was the first time the Air Tattoo had ever had to cancel one of its days in its 38-year history.

Re-organising such an event would be virtually impossible.

Waddington had the same problem last year, and cancelled the Sunday show. The final decision may well be out of the organisers hands too - public safety in the car parks and showground being the primary concern.

I hope it's still going ahead on Sunday, it's a helluva journey down to Fairford!

Not looking good. My friend is down there with the cadets, so i'm guessign they will still be there regardless, but if the show doesn't go on, bad luck i guess. The new colours ceremony ( obviously not its techincal or proper name!) was just very lucky today, as apparently, according to the BBC, only 60% landed as they should have on thursday. I wonder if the queens helicopter got any special dispensation, what with such a short weather window.

Tomorrow and sunday are supposed to be nice, so that'll give the organisers time to do something with the car parks, I guess they could send the cadets out with a hair dryer and extension cord each for the day. ;D

This is the worst season I can remember for a very long time. We've had wet summers before but I've never known so many events cancelled or postponed because of the rotten weather. Not only rain but very strong winds. I feel for the organisers & everyone involved behind the scenes. It must be soul-destroying after all their preparation.

Please don't mention global warming. I can remember getting soaked through at Farnborough several years running back in the good old days but I don't recall it ever being cancelled. :P
