Air Force One(s)??

Postby TSC. » Wed May 14, 2008 9:14 am

Talking to my boss today about 'Air Force One' & I told him I'd seen a picture somewhere of two (Air Force One) 747's in the hangar at Edwards. It was an excellent picture, but I can't for the life of me find it again now.

Does anybody else remember seeing the picture or website with it on? I guess I got the link from here somewhere.

If somebody could link me to such a picture I'd be very grateful.

Cheers,

TSC.

I'm sure not such a large plane is needed for just the president and a few others....

The problem being, not the President, but the "few others". Also, President of a large powerful country, needs to project a large powerful image. The 747 does that rather well. In the UK, we could probably get away with transporting Gordon about in a Chipmunk..........That's if we could squeeze his fat a$$ in to begin with ;D

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

I think you misunderstand the full capability of AF1. ;)

Almost the same kit as a E-4B but in a less conspicuous package...

Aside from the image thing, AF1 has to be able to stay aloft for weeks, if necessary (yes, it has aerial refueling capability).... say, in the event of nuclear war.

It's sort of a flying command bunker.

So aside from the weapons and countermeasures stuff, and the comm and surveillance gear, and the food and water storage, a little elbow room was designed in, so that the pres. and any others aboard will be reasonably comfortable on such an extended flight.

And there's usually more than a "few" people aboard...start with a crew of 26, and seats for over 100 people if needed.  ;)

Same as any other pilot of their rank based at Andrews would. The military doesn't care if your flying AF1 or a Cessna 152. If your both O-6 (lowest common AF1 pilot rank) you and based at the same AFB, you get the exact same pay.

But you can be sure not just anybody pulls that duty... and it looks pretty good on the resume. ;)

Funny thing most people don't realize...

Is that Air Force One is any aircraft the President of the United States is currently on...

From a Cessna 152...

All the way up to the Orbiters (Atlantis, Discovery, Endeavour).

If he's on it, then it's Air Force One!

(Same goes for the Vice President and Air Force Two!)

Not entirely true, sometimes it Marine one, or Navy one.   ;D ;)  But you are correct, whatever he's on is now considered one.  One other thing people sometimes miss, a lot of times there are two aircraft, one with the President, and one is a decoy.  They do this especially with Marine One.  You never know which one he may be on.

Any USAF aircraft he/she is on... ;)

As for the Orbiters...

...I doubt he'd/she'd be insured! ;D

The topic of Air Force One always interests me.

Well in extreme cases I think the pres. would go on orbiters. What if little green men from somewhere attacked the planet and he had to escape? I think he would use some type of space craft. ;D

As currently...the 747 is a 747 on steroids.  :o The communications deck has the capacity of a land bound switchboard. If the pres. wanted he could contact anyone on the planet.

Defensive counter measures are also installed in an event of an air to air missile. Sophisticated radar technology and GPS would make the TCAS system look like nothing.  Not to mention the always present fighter plane escort and a crew of highly trained and secret bodyguards.
