Whereas with the AN-225, that is "proper" rare - one flew, and only the one still flies.

I agree with you on the AN-124; almost a daily sight at BZN.

The Jackaroo is quite rare as I believe only 19 were built* (converted from the DH Tiger Moth). Used to see them almost every day at Shoreham back in the 1960s. Yep, I mentioned the Tristar. Confirmed it was an RAF tanker (got photos today, rego ZD953), you are lucky, she really is a beautiful bird. Not what one would usually find on this half of the globe!

On the topic of ZD953, I wasn't aware she was painted in RAF low-vis? Only photos I can find of her are in the high-vis (half white, half grey) scheme.

What defines rare? Well, 757s have been mass produced. We get them only when a C-32 visits Sydney, so thats rare.

And there is only one An-225 produced - if you live around Gostomel - still rare. Its all up to your own judgement.

Nice one. Lucky chaps. They are slowly all going into the low-viz scheme (with the hi-viz engines!).

I think rarity also boils down to proportion - I would consider an airworthy Bf109 rare (there is only one real Bf109 airworthy), or any surviving Bf109 airframe, as there are so few survivors out of a 33,000+ production line.

On the flip side, look at the VC10. 54 were built, and 16 still fly, with at least 3 complete examples in museums. So 19 of 54 - roughly 35%! Admittedly once the RAF retire them (of which I can realistically see no more than 2, maybe 4 surviving), they will become a lot rarer!

I believe I saw a Jackaroo fly at Guelph Airpark in Ontario about 10 yrs ago, and if I search my old archives, I think I may have at least one image of it......a friend of mine ID'd it for me........there is more info about it here.........

As a bit of trivial info to the story in the link, Steve Gray who is mentioned, along with his son Scott, are world class R/C heli pilots. They have both represented Canada at the World Champs.
