First solo!

Postby Chris E » Sun Mar 16, 2008 10:51 pm

Hey, I finally got my first solo in last week.  Wow, it was so much fun, I came back in after flying with my instructor, and he told me keep the engine running, call the tower for full stop taxi backs, and tell them you are a student pilot solo.  I couldnt believe what I was hearing, but he hopped out and went inside, so I closed the door, sat for a second to relax, and called the tower.  I was flying in the evening, so it was busy, my local airport has a good amount of jet traffic, as it is a good alternative for corporations other than going to O'Hare, so it was really busy.  I was waiting for a jet and was cleared at the intersection for takeoff, so I took that, and did one nice landing, came around, waited about 10 minutes for clearance again, and then this time, on downwind, a Falcon Jet called in saying he was over the lakeshore on final, meaning on about a 5 mile final.  I was cleared to land behind him, well, I could not find him.  So I kept my distance on downwind leg, and still could not find him anywhere.  I brought the plane into slow flight about even with the numbers when I still couldnt find him.  I kept going at 65 knots until I had gone through the 5 miles and was over the shore, finally I saw his lights on the horizon then, he must have been way out there when he said he was on the lakeshore, because that took way to long.  I was worried then because I was in a Cessna 152, and was coming in after this big falcon Jet, so the turbulence made me nervous.  I stayed high and then dropped in past his touchdown point, and it was the smoothest landing I had ever made.  I was very pleased and did 2 more landings just like that one before it was starting to get dark and I decided to head in.  It was the most amazing feeling to see how light the plane was without the extra body.  I can not wait to get up again!  Should be soon!

congratulations!

reading that brings back a lot of memories. not only of my first solo, but of many subsequent ones.

One of the best things about being a flight instructor, especially one at a smaller close knit school - is experiencing all the first solos with the students and sometimes their families.

all the laughing and, shaky legs and pats on the back and hand shakes from all the local pilots. even picture taking! the first solo is always a fun event and a wonderful accomplishment - not to mention a vital milestone to your flight training.  8-)

Congrats, and well done!! :)
Nothing like a little challenge on your first solo to season you a little bit... and it feels good to know you not only took that first solo hop without incident, you also had a new decision to make and handled it correctly on your own.
Good luck, and keep up the good work!

thanks guys, I cant wait to get up again!  So Brett, do you think I should have just kept going at normal cruise on the extended downwind?  I want to make sure that if I make a mistake, I can learn from it!  I will see if next time I am soloing I can get a few pictures and bring them here.

ah alright, yeah, I see your point there.  Thanks for the advice.  And yeah, I did have to speed up again to about 75 before my turn to base, and then turn to final at around 70.  So when I am cleared to land, its up to me so long as I land in the order they give?

Yes.. once you hear the words, "cleared to land", it's your runway.

If they're qualified words like: "number two after the Lear on final", he'll expect you to not only acknowledge those conditions, but to call the traffic in sight (or to let him know you don't see the traffic yet). Once you respond, "traffic in sight".. he's washed his hands of you and will count on you to maintain spacing.

... the main reason I'd balk at going into slow-flight while in a pattern, is that there might be someone behind me

yeah, that could pose for a big problem.  I hadnt really thought about that, but that would make sense, and with everyone on a uniform pattern, could make for a bad day.

Congratulations!  Every time I hear about a first solo, they're always surprised when the instructor hops out and tells them to do it on their own.  I know that was the case with me. ;D

A bit belated here, but many well-deserved congratulations.  You should know that you are being an inspiration, by what you have shared, to many of us yet who still dream to take PPL lessons.  IT is so wonderful of you to share your triumph with us.  I hope you continue to share your progress with all of us in the future.  I know I will be looking forward to reading more, especially since you have such a narrative gift for the telling of your exciting experience!  You actually had me at the edge of my seat as I was reading about your approach while looking out for the fighter jet.  And, I actually had a feeling of relief when I got to the end of your recounting and discovered all had worked out so very well in the end.

Great job!

All the best,
Darrin
