PPL at Ormond Beach, FL

Postby Cobra » Mon Mar 10, 2008 12:16 pm

As i mentioned a while ago (if anyone remembers !) i was interested in finishing my PPL out in Florida. Thats all be booked and sorted now, leave on the 31st of March...! Very excited! Doing the course with Ormond Beach Aviation, which i have heard mixed things about...but that seems to be true of most schools out there. www.flyoba.com

Anyone got any tips for me? Stuff which i need to bring which i may have overlooked? First time i have been abroad totally on my own, which is a little scary! Im just trying to make sure i have got all the ground school out of the way before i go over there, so all i will have to do is fly!

This is the thing thats scaring me the most, i am aware that the drinking age in Florida is 21...but what is the age to go into bars etc? From some of the guys i have spoken to there is a pretty good night life over there, which will be somewhat trashed if i can't get in anywhere!! Anyone know somewhere to buy good fake ID's lol?

Would love to hear any tips/experiences

Drinking age is 21 and if you you get a drinking ticket, you can pretty much kiss you flying dreams goodbye.  It probably won't stop you from getting your license, but it's something that has to be reported to the FAA and is on your "record" for all to see, including potential employers.  I don't know how it works in Florida, but in Wisconsin, after 9:00 PM, you have to be 21 to get into a bar or be with a parent or guardian.  Otherwise the bar will get a ticket and a fine so they do what they can to keep you out.  So, in the end, don't be dumb.  If you're coming over to fly, focus on flying, not partying, not to mention, if you want to do well in flying you're going to have to spend a good amount of time in the books.

JAA - Joint Aviation Authorities link - who through the standardisation of European regulations (which on the face of it are a good thing), are eroding our own control of our regulations and licensing - levelling us with the same common denominator of the rest of the states listed on that link.

JAR - Joint Aviation Requirements
Which are the regulations themselves, hence you will have a JAR-FCL (Flight Crew Licencing IIRC) PPL
