This might appear cynical but we don't know for certain what caused this incident. It shouldn't take long to find out as fortunately everyone survived & the flight recorders should be easily recovered. There was obviously a certain amount of luck involved but why does everyone seem so surprised that the crew did their jobs competently & with the minimum of fuss? This is no more than I would expect from the captain & crew of any major airline. Yes, they did well but it's what they're trained to do & what they're paid for.

"On this occasion, if the incident had occurred 30 seconds earlier, the whole outcome would have been completely different"....

Pretty telling photos at the above link. Take a look at the engines - looks to me like they were pretty stationary...
Looking at the point it touched down, I'd say that 30 seconds may well be 3 seconds, or even less - going at 150mph + that'll be covering 100m in a couple of seconds... 2 or 3 seconds earlier and thats landing on the road or worse...

Hmmm.... If you look at this pic

The N1 compressor blades seem quite intact, if not a little muddy.
Whereas the N1 compressor blades on engine 1 look like they have been torn off on impact.

This could well be the reason why the aircraft was seen to be banking moments before touch down? It would seem that the No 2 engine either wasn't running or wasn't operating at the same power as engine 1 as they both seem to have taken similar damage.

I know! Like I said, any more than 4-5 seconds earlier that 777 would be resting on the road after ploughing through some houses... :o :-/
