Missing nukes found on a B-52?

Postby Wing Nut » Wed Sep 05, 2007 8:53 am

Will someone tell me how you can take off on a flight WITH FIVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS ATTACHED TO YOUR WINGS and not know it?  :o

Someone didn't do their pre-flight properly...  ::)

I can see how a pilot would overlook that.  The paperwork says you're carying 5 live, conventional cruise missiles.  You do the pre-flight and see there are indeed five live cruise missiles on the plane.  How would you know they're nukes?

Because those 5 twenty foot long missiles were supposed to have been removed beforehand...  ;)

[quote]The missiles, set to be decommissioned, should have been removed from the plane. Instead, they were mounted on the bomber

Seriously, stuff like this happens from time to time...I could tell some stories...Trust me. ;D Some people forget the need to look at the paperwork closely as the missiles were apparently supposed to be be mounted on the pylon. They just weren't supposed to have warheads installed. Somebody didn't read serial numbers off. But hey all advanced ALCMs look the same right?, and those W80 warheads are small. ;D The USAF personnel involved will be held accountable.

If you read the CNN version here the missles were suppose to be on the B-52. The problem is the nuclear warheads were suppose to be removed from the missles but for some reason that never happened.

Sorry for digging this topic up again. Here's some important snipets from Air Force Reg 91-11(Safety rules for U.S Strategic Bomber Aircraft) as of 14Feb2006.

This instruction implements AFPD 91-1, Nuclear Weapons and Systems Surety. It applies to operations
with B-52H and B-2A aircraft and nuclear weapons dedicated for use with the aircraft. Section A assigns
responsibilities. Section B contains each nuclear weapon systems

Not necessarily.  If you're supposed to be carying missiles anyway how do you know what's in the warhead?  We're all assuming the plane was supposed to be empty but there's no evidence of that in the story.

Because when it involves carrying any missile, live or a training round, you double check. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't any visual identification for each type either.

No excuse as far as I can see...
