to add to the above sentiments, hope he is fine and they find him. I bet hes probably sitting in some village not knowing what is going onto find him, its a possibility?!

I think the fuss about him not having a flight plan is just a result of uneducated media.  He was likely just flying VFR, you don't need a flightplan and he has enough experience to fly VFR in low light conditions (which I assume is what he was flying in if he left monday night)

Just found out about this on nightly news, and came right over here to SimV.  Thanks for the post.

Please keep us updated on this.  I can't always catch the news.  I suppose it'll be updated on AOL or Yahoo news tho.  Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope this turns out OK.

Filing a VFR plan merely provides you with "free SAR insurance"... if you do not close your plan by phone or radio at the estimated time, they start looking along your route of flight.
It's a good idea when flying over remote or rugged areas, where it's unlikely that a rash or forced landing would draw attention.
Kind of like where he was flying...    :-/

But almost equally effective is letting someone know where you're going and when you expect to get there-- I assume Fossett was expected.

Got my fingers crossed- if his problem was survivable, I'd say he has a better chance than most of still being alive.

It's not much use if the searchers are missing...

On a serious note, I hope that he is fine.

The search for Steve Fossett:

Just loaded up  the Sim with my Beech Baron 58 to examine the location.
Tried to locate Hilton Ranch, South of Smith Valley, Nevada, but it isn't listed in the Sim.

Getting lost in the Nevada Desert is something I wouldn't wish to experience!
Just red rocks and sand for as far as the eye can see!

F.... 8-)...!

P.S. I find it interesting to read various bits of interesting news from around the World, then visit the location in the Sim... :)...!
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.
