Postby FsNovice » Sun Aug 05, 2007 12:16 pm

A piper cherroke, shortly after takeoff pitched down and crashed into a field after takeoff from Sandown Airport on the Isle of White.  3 are confirmed dead, but it is not known how many were on board the plane at the time.

If there were four adults aboard and anywhere near full tanks, it's no wonder he had trouble clearing the trees... Cherokees don't like that sort of thing.
Maybe he planned his W&B correctly but had engine trouble- that would yield similar results. Very sad, and I can understand the instinctive urge to pull up, even when it would've been best to abort and maybe roll into the trees.

charlie, no it wasnt enroute from the midlands, it had just taken off from the IOW to france. Hope that alleviates your fears

Read what I said again. I know it had just taken off from Sandown, but it was en-route from Tatenhill (in the West Midlands) to France, as it says in the BBC link you posted. I expect the stop at Sandown was for fuel, considering the number on board.

The plane, which had flown from Tatenhill Airfield in Staffordshire, was leaving the Isle of Wight Airport at Sandown at midday when it crashed.

Tatenhill is my local. :( It was probably G-ATNB, G-BJOA or G-AXTL. Doubt it was G-BELP since that's used for training. A great shame.  :'(

We just came back from there today. We were at the donkey sanctuary in Wroxall and could see the smoke. Only until we got back to totland bay and watched the t.v. we realised what had happened.
