hello everyone :'(

being a resident of Sao Paulo myself, i was shocked when i saw the news about the crash...
i was watching the news until now and so far it seems the fire is still going in the TAM warehouse the plane crashed into...
a part of the building has collapsed, and they estimate there were about 170 people onboard the aircraft and still an unknown number of people might be inside the building

the runway here at SBSP is known for being way too short for this size aircraft, and has been repaved recently, but left ungrooved and unable to drain out the excess water, making it very slippery

i live abot 4-5 miles from the airport, and my friend who came here today said he heard an explosion this afternoon, also we picked up some news on the radio about that same explosion... only later we found it had been a plane crashing

ive seen many people today trying to explain how it happened, my theory is that it went down like this:
the plane was cleared to land as usual by the controller... after touchdown and applying the brakes (pilots here land with autobrakes on 3) the plane lost grip on the slippery runway, and started to drift to the left... the pilot tried to go around and applied full throttle, but there was not enough runway left for a take-off run... the aircraft stalled right after leaving the airport grounds and crashed into the warehouse which is just across the street.

i assume the plane did fly for some time before stalling, since there was no trail of damage leading from the crash site... also if the plane had skidded all the way there, it would have picked up every car on the highway between the airport and the warehouse

this is not the first time this has happened here... in fact, just yesterday an ATR-72 skidded across the runway and onto the grass...

maybe it's time they shut down this airport for good now... and it won

UPDATE: just watched the msnbc video and noticed what they are saying is the plane's fuselage is,in fact, the banner from the warehouse, which was a cargo warehouse for TAM express... the plane crashed about 10 meters to the left of that sign and you can only see the rudder with the TAM logo on it, i also recall seing part of a burning wing spread across the nearby buildings to the left and it was also on fire, judging from it's position, it's fair to assume there isn't much left of the plane :-/
they also say that the plane hit a gas station... and although there is a gas station near the warehouse, it seems the plane missed it, or at least the fuel from the station doesnt seem to have ignited...

I see Sky News are using their crap graphics again... sort of like a poor man's FS.. a bit distasteful IMO.

Wikipedia states the main runway is about 6500ft, so not excessively short, but as we saw with the closure of Bristol Airport in the UK for a few days this year, good drainage is of paramount importance.

My condolences to all those killed and their families. Tragic incident, just a minor observation, looks like the pilot tried some action near the end of the flight as the shot i saw showed the tail fully left at the crash site. Not wanting to speculate on anything but this does hint at the pilot trying to save the plane and his PAX. Tragic day  :'( :'( :'(

hello again

i just watched the video from the security camera that films the SBSP runway on TV...
it seems the airbus came in way too fast and was unable to brake... then it goes out of camera view and you can see a bright orange light coming from there.... what a dreadful thing that was...

well, the rescue teams have nearly pulled all the bodies out of the wreck by now and some have already been identified, also TAM has released the passenger manifest which lists 186 passengers.

later on they showed mobile camera videos taken by people on the street just seconds after the crash, and i couldnt help to not cry... i

I always thought the Autobrake 3 setting was for emergencies only or in severe wet conditions on normal length runways, not as standard on short runways like this. Seems like there is no braking 'reserve' for A320's landing here.
