Peter Besenyei (HUN) edged past Brit Paul Bonhomme in a spine-tingling Red Bull Air Race showdown in Monument Valley, flying through an obstacle course above the rugged terrain of the iconic Western setting that made John Wayne famous. British pilot Steve Jones escaped injury in the quarter-finals after crashing heavily into an Air Gate just metres above the ground, an incident that left his plane slightly damaged and forced him to retire from the race.

Race 3: Istanbul, Turkey

Building on the success of 2006 where crowds of over 1 million people lined the Golden Horn, an estuary that separates the city, the Air Race circus will be once again swoop into Istanbul at the beginning of June. Mike Mangold, who took the honours in 2006, has had a steady start to the 2007 season (currently in 3rd place) but a win in Turkey would put him right back in the driving seat (or should that be cockpit?) to be the 2007 Red Bull Air Race Champion.
