Microlite flight

Postby zeberdee » Mon Feb 05, 2007 3:25 pm

I went up in an Icarus C42 yesterday afternoon, I went to Barton (Manchester UK) and went up for 30 mins. It was fantastic  8-) crusing at 85 kts. We went up to 3000 ft I could see Blackpool well but Liverpool and Manchester were under the fog. The Icarus is very responsive and very very nice, the cockpit is wider than the Cessna 150. One of the things that struck me was the lack of vibration. The two things I would like to change was the throttle position and the flaps. The throttle is between your legs, the flaps lever is above the dash in the centre of the roof, the stick is in the centre and sitting in the left seat you use your right hand for the stick so have to use your left hand to pull on the flaps. The first stage of flap is easy but on final pulling on the second stage of flap was quite hard. Electric flaps would be better. I would recomend the Icarus to any one as a very nice comfy cheeper way to fly. :D

Sounds good. Looks a nice little beasty. Having looked at a few photos the (quite common now) centrally shared stick does present some challenges. I see your point with the flaps, but can't quite make out the throttle. I'm sure if they really tried they could have arranged it a little more ergonomically without adding two much extra weight. :)

One of the things I like showing passengers is at 6000ft and above over the Yorkshire Dales, on a nice day, your can see both the North Sea and the Irish Sea and Morecambe Bay. Spectacular! :)

How long before Cessna decide to produce one? Their 152 replacement concept last year wasn't too different to contemporary designs, so maybe they may move into the more affordable market...

Paul my advice to you is get up in one, I know you love the 150 this so much better. I had a hour in a 150/152 it was OK/nice the Icarus is tons better ;) The heater is f***ing good. At ground level the temp was +8 c at 3000 ft we had to turn the heater down. The gull wing doors made getting in very easy no standing on the strut ::)

Charlie, the throttle is best described as a rod that comes out from under the seat with an elbow joint and a rod pointing up you push it forward to go fast pull it back to slow down. The bit that you push/pull folds down to aid entry. (Don't wear a skirt, well only a mini if you have to)  ;D ;D The centre stick is fine electric trim on top push bike brake lever for the brakes, there is a padded arm rest behind it just the right hight for my elbow to rest on. The cockpit is wider than the Cessna 150 and with both me and the instructor being 6ft tall we didnt rub shoulders at all. :-[

TSC the Cessna LSA is too heavy,  :'( microlites can have a MAX take off weight of 450 Kg slightly more if it is anphibian) It looks nice though

Ozzy the only pics I got are of the kids sitting in the plane after the flight. I left the camera in the car :-[   :'(

Wowzers...!

Thanks for the link Martyn...

...(reminds me it's been a while since I scoured the Cessna site)... :'(...!

That Sport model is a new one on me... :)...!

Looks good, but I notice that the useful  "150/152" rear window is missing...so no rear-view mirror..LOL...!
..and it's got a Rotax 912 motor now, replacing the Continental, and Textron-Lycoming engines... :o...!

Looks a  pretty aircraft though, maintaing the high-wing concept.. :-*...!

I wonder when it will appear on the market...;)...?

Cheers all...!

Paul... 8-)...!
