Most powerful turboprop engine actively operated on aircraft, second most powerful turboprop ever made. The NK-16 has more HP output (18.800hp vs 15.000 of the NK-12), but is exc;usively used for oil and gas pumping.
The unique sounds come from the power regulator system that keeps a constant 15.000 hp until 20.000ft. At that level the blowoffs are completely closed making the engine subject to the usual performance graphs of a normal turboprop.
The contra-rotating effect is achieved through deflector vanes inside the engine... with the engine powered off, both props can be turned in the same direction as there is no mechanical link between them...
