Somebody talk me into it...

Postby beaky » Wed Aug 16, 2006 8:03 pm

Just found out that the EAA's B17, Aluminum Overcast, will be stopping on Long Island this coming weekend on it's "Keep it Flying" tour... for 35 minutes (20 or so in the air) inside this magnificent beast, they are charging $360 for EAA members. You get to move around inside the plane during the flight, even visiting the flight deck.
I have so many more important things to do with $360, but I do have the money, and who knows if and when I'll get a chance like this again...and after all, if I'd gone to Airventure this year, I'd have spent a lot more than that, ride or no ride.
All I need is for somebody to give me a brilliant, inarguable reason why I must do this...   ;D

I've spoken to people who have done it, both aviation enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts, and both have said it was one of the most amazing things they have ever experienced.  Looking out the nose or the bomb-bay at the ground passing beneath you, and realizing what it was like to actually fly in a B-17 in combat was really worth it.  I think it would be really amazing to do it, and I am still kicking myself for not geting a ride when Aluminum Overcast was here in Madison before AirVenture.

And, why the h*ll not!?  That's why you work and make money; to spend it on sweet airplane rides in B-17's and stuff. ;D ;)

Of course you should go! Its a B-17! How many times does a B-17 come by and say "Hey! YOU! Do you want a ride? Only 360 dollars!" You dont hmm and haw and kick the tires you say "Hell yeah I want to come on your B-17!"

Having flown once in what was (no longer, she made a belly landing a couple of years back) the only fly Bristol Blenheim, I can only say this, spend, spend, spend. If you have to, eat at a friend

2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Rotty its only money.
And lets face it, god forbid it should ever have another accident, but if it were to, your chance would be gone completely. Plus I am pretty much sure its flight time as it gets older will be restricted.

$360 for a life time of memories, stories and pictures? I'd say its worth it.

Hey Rotty I think you should not go up the B17!!!!!
You could pay for me to do it for you, then I could tell you all about it after ;D ;D

Just DO IT over this side of the pond we don't get the chance to go near them let alone go up in them.
Please take lots of pics and ENJOY

Look at it this way you can't take the money with you when you're dead and you should ALWAYS live life to the fullest.
My ambition is to be an old foggie with grandchildren sitting on my knee and be able to say "Grandad did that"... my family is full of boring non-doers.
Just get plenty of photos please ;)

The man who is paying for flying himself around in a cessna at $125 is an hour (or whatever it is ;) ) is having a hard time resolving this query?

Gotta be done Rotty  ;) 8)

The key here is..  flying YOURSELF.. With the important qualifier; one step closer to an instrument rating..

Yes, but instrument ratings can wait. :)
