XN728

Postby gryshnak » Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:13 am

While driving down to RIAT last weekend, I stopped to look at XN728 (if you're not familiar with it, do a Google search for that number).  Supposedly the new owner is going to take slightly better care of her than the previous owner (wouldn't be difficult).

This was taken between the bars of a security fence so at least the plane shouldn't suffer from any more vandalism, although it will probably always be exposed to the elements.

A sad sight indeed... let's just hope the new owner can actually do something with her...

Been there long enough - if I were the new owner I'd have bought another airframe...

Can't see any future than where she is already. She's a bit of a landmark really....

Because it's sat right next to the A1 ..... the major N-S road between London and Edinburgh so it has become rather a landmark.

Because it's been sat next to the A1 (A major British road linking London with the north of England and Scotland) for the best part of 20 years...

It's about saving this one, not replacing it with another!

This is one of the few remaining F.2As anywhere...

Mmm, I know, but it just also happens to have been sat in the open air being graffitied, weed on by dogs with all sorts of panels letting the elements in for the last 20 years, and just to make it even better, next to a very busy road. I may have just invested my money elsewhere...

It wouldn't surprise me if it's eventual fate is similar to Blackpool's Vulcan...

I think it was more of a harmony than an echo.

As much as I hate to say it I think this aircraft is a lost cause. Just look at the state of it, restoring that would take a lot of time and money, and I really don't see why anyone is going to expend either on this.

It does look like a lot of money will be needed to restore it. According to Google it has been on supports for ages and its weight hve caused them to be pushed up into the belly, not helped by someone pinching the radome and shifting the centre of gravity, making it point skywards.

Such a shame :(
