When I saw my first crash at Old Warden 1996 (Slingsby Firefly) I became very nervous, even apprehensive whilst watching low level aerobatics for a year or so, particularly that weekend when I was Old Warden for the shows on Saturday and Sunday (when OW was doing really well), and the 60th Anniversary of the Spitfire show at Duxford on the Monday...

Hagar--  The engine failures I've seen were up at the airport I work at in Washington State... this airshow was down in Oregon.  Another creepy thing that happened at the show was one of the R/C airplanes putting on a demo folded its wings up and crashed earlier in the day.  

Almost more so than yesterda, I feel almost physically sick about what happened... just cannot get those images out of my head.

According to the info in the pictures I took, the aircraft was only in the air approx. 4 minutes.  And considering the guy man-handled that airplane into the air in the first place and NEVER even retracted the gear, he knew he had problems on roll-out.  Too bad he didn't/couldn't have aborted the takeoff.

Also, I have a question for those of you who are familiar with the Hawker Hunter... does it have Afterburner?  Because I remember just after it got in the air I could see something flashing in the back of the A/c.  I instantly thought, "wow, I didn't know this thing had AB" And resembled the afterburner of a MiG-17... how it kind of flickers.  

And I definately think the pilot was trying to pick a "good" spot to put her down.  The crash site was right next to an open field.  

And the pilot was obviously struggling the entire time, that plane didn't have any power and was probably pretty darn close to stall for nearly the entire flight.  

The first thing I want to do when I get back home is to go flying, so the last memory I have isn't of that crash.  Ugh...

I realised my mistake after I posted my first reply. I've actually flown in a Hunter (two-seat T.7) & although this was many years ago I remember the acceleration on take off was not impressive. IIRC the only version of the Hunter that had afterburner was the one & only F.3 WB188 that broke the World Air Speed record along the coast not far from where I'm sitting now.

From the unnatural nose-up attitude in that video it was inevitable that it couldn't maintain height. Any experienced R/C modeller will tell you that. It might have been better if he'd levelled out a bit.

But you have to admit, it's a potietial target, no?

Normally i'm not worried about these things..but i dont know....it just feels wierd.

You're saying that the biggest airshow in the world, with multi-country involvement, and most branches of the U.S. military present, would not be a potiential target?!

I doubt very much that the average terrorist has ever heard of it. With all that's going on in the world right now I wouldn't think that they're interested in an air show in a remote part of the USA.

Well, that's exactly what it is. Nobody outside the aviation business has ever heard of it. What do you suppose these terrorists are going to do, set off some big explosions? I think they have enough of their own to be going on with.



RIAT went off without a hitch over here last weekend with the Farnborough Air Show all this week. Both are more well-known among ordinary people in this part of the world than Airventure. I don't know who's been putting these ideas in your head but go to Oshkosh & enjoy yourself.

I guess the way im thinking is, no not everyone has heard of oshkosh but then again almost nobody heard of this oregon airport, or it's airshow until something bad happened. Now, it's headline news.
