the red arrows using Typhoon. Now that would be a sight to see ;D Not sure it would look that good in red and white though.

It would look awful, the Typhoon in an ugly design!

That and I dont think there will ever be 9 operational typhoons available at one time.

That's for sure! How far late are they now?  And how far over budget?  There have been some staggeringly stupid decisions taken so far over Eurofighter - most of them made by overpaid managers who should have been kept well out of the way!  Amyone else hear about the fiasco of the gun that is fitted but can't fire?

All to be addressed in the Tranche 2 and Craig's hope that the rumored Tranche 3 is still on would bring the plane completely up to date.
As for incompetent project managers. Welcome to the world of military contractors. :D
I love the plane, and IMO it's anything but ugly. But hey its one of those, you love it or hate it aircraft.

Wow, I really won't to light this thread up... but I'm gonna be cool and be my nice self.:)

I prefer the F16 over the F18 anyday, I think its a characteristic and interesting looking plane whereas the F18 looks, dare i say, generic?

JB

May I say, you judge a airplane soley on looks.. "Generic". That's very sad, because the F-18 beats the F-14 in every area besides it's "interesting look's".. So when you see a new jet that looks cool or interessting, you think it's the best? You don't judge the performance?
:'(

But to go with a car analogy, im not keen on the americans 'theres no substitute for cubic inches' philosophy,

What are you trying to say by this comment? That we build airplanes too small? Because I can decribe why... lol.

;D ::)

P.s, Don't post so much ignorant things about American Aviation. ;D

Maybe when I fly an F18 and an F14 in real life then yeah, to judge them on looks would be silly, but since all the general aviation enthusiast is ever going to do is look at these planes then yeah i will judge them on looks and in my opinion, based on looks, the F18 is ugly and cant hold a match to the F14. I prefer the F14 to the F18 in the same way I prefer a Ferrari F40 to its successors, the F50 and the F60 (Enzo). There arew so many electronics and computers in the modern supercars/fighter jets that, yeah sure they improve performance but they take the thrill out of driving/flying it. To quote Jerermy Clarkson;
What would you rather do, go out and play a game of football (The F40/F14) or play it on playstation? (The Enzo/F18)

As for the other thing, I was refering to an automotive analogy and a famous phrase from some american engine manufacturer who saids the exact words 'theres no substitute for cubic inches' when refering to why his engines were getting larger rather than more refined. It may have been about the Chevy small block V8 but I cant be sure.

Another thing before you claim I'm American-bashing, take a look at the Boeing v Airbus thread. Im about the only European in there flying the flag for Boeing.

Id appreciate not being called ignorant for voicing my own views and opinions

It's just in my opinion you are coming up with rediculous reasons why one aricraft may be better then another just by it's looks or "non-descriptive words"

"F18 is ugly and cant hold a match to the F14" Can you say something better then ugly. Decribe what parts of the aircraft are ugly? You are bringing a ton of "Three letter words" that don't help a darn thing to understand what your saying, that's why I'm saying your though's have alot of ignorance. Words like "ugly" is something that a 3 yr. old would use, come up with something original okay!

I don't get the problem. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I much prefer the classic look of the F-14 to the F-18 myself. If you object to the word ugly why didn't you pick on Gryshnak for stating that the Typhoon is ugly? ::) ;)

I can attest to both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels being tight, high, fast, and noisy.....I've seen them for a number of years.....and like Doug, I can remember the T'birds flying the F-100 Super Sabre and everything else up to the present.....for me, I can only think of the Talon as being a more eyecatching mount for the "AirForce" boys....

....as far as the Angels go, I have seen them fly from the F-11 Tiger on.....A-4, F-4, F-18.....been to see them all........for one season, both the 'Birds and the Angels flew the Phantom......quite a noisy show when they both showed up........

For now though, I guess I'm spoiled by having the Snowbirds practice in my back yard for three weeks every spring.........oops, did I say that out loud ?....sorry, not rubbing it in.....honest...... ;)

As long as we all get to see some quality flying, does it really matter who we consider the best,.....just let us keep watching and enjoying....... 8)

I usually stick to the poster or the person who creates their topic? Not trying to but in other members business. It's just if your a aircraft enthusiest you just don't call a aicraft "ugly" say something more appropiate. Like I like to say some aircraft are ugly but I never say it cause it can start heated debates. Why would it? because it's not needed, I love the f-18 and for someone to say something for no reason, does not help me understand. Okay, yah I repect your opinion, but please it's just not required to call a aircraft ugly and say it's worthless, unless you have facts to back that up. Because as a aeronuatical "enthusiest" in egineering I can explain how the most "ugly" aircarft can kill one of the most advanced fighters around. Just like your stated with the F-18 vs. F-14 etc. So I end this debate respected for all the people I offened. ;D

I wouldnt for a minute claim that the F14 is a better aircraft and I do understand the many many advantages the F18 holds over the F14.

The bits I find especially 'ugly' are the forward set vertical tail planes and they way the forward part of the fuselage (just infront of the intakes) looks like it was a fat plane stuck on top of a narrow plane... if that makes sense. I think the whole aircraft just looks smaller and more fragile that the meatier looking F14.

And finally I think the silhouette of an F14 with swept wings from below is one of the sexiest aviation sights in the world

Both!! :)

 Both teams are amazing and it does not matter what they fly.  It takes big ones to do the things they do!!

Have you not seen a Harrier? Now, a Harrier formation team would be worth watching.

You mean like the Royal Navy's Sea Harrier FA2 display? ;) (Unfortunately, now, non-existent).
