Postby Omag 2.0 » Fri May 05, 2006 2:50 am

Lot's of commotion at EBBR - Brussels airport today... This morning the main technical hangar of Sabena technics caught fire. It's under control now, but the firedepartment has to let it burn down...

SN Brussels airlines A330's and the Belgian airforce C-130 Hercules amongst several other airlines are client there... It's going to be though for them...

Seems there was no other option than to let it die out in a controled manner...

Indeed, one of the managers of SN Brussels Airlines sent my father a bunch of pictures, I'll put some up.

In the meanwhile, you can hear about this on Euronews on TV, or for flemish-speakers http://www.demorgen.be/telex/?news=B317389.

SNBA planes are safe.
A C-130H of the Belgian Air Force was completely destroyed.

SNBA Manager Mr. Lemmen just contacted us to say that the fire has been extinguished and air traffic is back to normal.

Here are some pictures:

Pretty Major.  :-/
All heavy maintenance by SN Technics is shifted for now to adjacent Hangar 41.
Hangar 40 was completely destroyed.

There isn't any official conclusion yet, but it seemed there was a team cleaning planes with a volitale, flamable product ( white-spirit). This may have caused the accident...

Ah well, at least no one was killed and all that was lost were a few relatively modern airliners and military aircraft, all of which easily replacable. Thankfully it seems that Sabena's most important aircraft, their formerly airworthy (and being restored to airworthiness) Westland Lysander is apparently safe.
