This was discussed on a.net a few days ago and someone photo shopped it and did some "clever maths" and worked out they were about 1000ft apart vertical.
Where's the challenge in landing with wheels?

Firstly this is being discussed like a topic of two down ;) ;D
Secondly, yes it looks close, until you see the last pic in the series which shows just how far apart they really are.

From what I've heard they were in the same hold with the 300 at FL90 and the 777 at FL100 :)

I made this mistake originally, just beacuse of the BBC article. That plane is NOT an A330. JAL do not have any A330s. But we can blame BBC for this mistake, I sim ply did not look at the picture close enough.

This leads me to the interesting question, just how similar are the 777 and the 330, based purely on looks from angles such as this. Obviously the 330 has engines closer to the fusilage but any other major differences people have spotted?

Wing shape wing size and wing angle are all differant. The A330's are not as wide as the 777's. but are longer. The 777's are swept back a little more.
Also I think you'll find the 777 is a little fatter.

You're quite right. I'd just taken the article at face value too...

Saw this posted on another site, so I claim no credit. I thought it was done rather well!

Hmm, A300 has 44,84 meters span, the 777 is 60,93 meters. This means that for both flying at a similar altitude the A300 wingspan should appear as 73% of the 777's wingspan (divide the two numbers).

A quick measure on the image shows that the A300's span is 93% of the 777's wingspan, meaning that the 777 is a fair lot higher than the Airbus. (Assuming that we are looking at both aircraft at the same angle.)

Well said!;D

It's amazing how close those jets appear some times.

I remember last summer I was on a 737 headed for Las Vegas and was staring out the window... and to my amazement another 737 went ZOOMING by!!  It was close enough to see it see that it was the one of Alaska Airlines new 737's with the winglets.  Even that jirk in the back picking his nose.

Anyway, that was my first experience with RVSM here in the States. lol :p  It was pretty sweet too!
The day is always better when you're flying upside down.

Reminds me of my last commercial flight (first leg)... I was leaving Vegas, bound for exotic Colombus, Ohio, and somewhere over Iowa I think, in the first faint light of dawn, I saw another airliner converging from the left ... wasn't 100% sure it would miss until it had almost passed overhead, at which point it looked to be at least 1000 feet above. A little unnerving...
First time I'd seen that, although more than once I'd caught a glimpse of another jet at the same FL going in the opposite direction- really drives home just how fast you're going...  :o  !
