F-111: Aardvark

I think names such as Thunderbolt, Fighting Falcon, Strike Eagle,... aren't really nicknames. They are too official for that.


I think that is the case with the F-111 aswell. F-111A/D/Fs, etc are 'Aardvarks', EF-111s being 'Ravens'.

Panavia Tornado: The Mighty Fin, Tonka
Shorts Tucano: Tin-can
Sepecat Jaguar: Shaguar
Bristol Brittania: Whispering Giant
HS748: Budgie, and the "Twenty ton dog whistle"*
BAe ATP: 80p, Advanced Technical Problem, The Parrot (its a big Budgie)**
Shackleton: 100,000 rivets in close formation, the Shack, the (original) Growler, and one I hadn't heard before, the Shacklecaster, bringing us to the...
Lancaster: Lanc
Strikemaster (and I suppose Jet Provost): Constant speed - variable noise machine
Gloster Meteor: Meatbox
DHC Chipmunk: Chippie

*anyone who's familiar with the sound of a R-R Dart will know why...

B747: Whale, The Valiant, Upstairs and Downstairs, Lump.
B747SP: Short Plane, Stupid Purchase.

I believe actually that the Beaufighter was Whispering death while the Corsair was Whistling Death.


That's what I ment. :) Only a couple of letters off. ;)

EF-111 is the ECM version of the Aardvark, so it became known as the 'Sparkvark'

One of the E- birds was also called the Queer, cant remember which one though. EA-6 comes to mind though.
