This summer I am thinking of going back to New York as I did last year. My home airport is BHX but i can easily travel to MAN, LGW or LHR. I was wondering if anybody knew the cheapest avaliable flights to either EWR or JFK. PTV's are a necessity, as last year I travelled Continental BHX-EWR and got bored stiff because they operate the 752 out of BHX hence no PTV's.

If you want PTV's you can forget the cheaper airlines. I believe your going to need to be on a united american or delta flight for those, or a continental flight thats a 777.

Yup, and thats what I do. The monitors are too small to really be of any use an the main screens are hard to see with passengers standing up every 5 minutes

Yeh 7 hours isn't too bad but, I just wondered about the cheapest option. BA is always ok but their recent record isn't impressive. I am thinking American at the moment. Also, for next years Ashes, I am mildly contemplating going to Sydney on 28th December and returning about a week later. Whats going to be cheapest option here, my estimations so far have lead me to Emirates from BHX.

remember when factoring in costs of flights, travel to and from the airport, and if your flights really early possible overnight hotel if you cant get there driving from birmingham early in the morning. It was what I had to do last time as there was no-way we were driving birmingham to london at 5am:) Bristol is another option, Easy to get to, New street hop on a train to Temple meads there in an hour then the flyer bus to the airport takes 20 minutes used to do it all the time. Flying from Bristol although no PTV's is pretty cheap.

I could do the driving to London or Manchester early in the morning. Done it before, drove to Gatwick at 3AM for flight to Boston Another possibility is connect in Dublin. Cheaper and i have heard that you clear customs in Dublin rather than queue for hours in the US. Is this true.

shannon I think, and while yes you clear immigration there, not customs, its absolutly awful. The lines can take over 3 hours to clear per plane, there are no bathrooms and the enclosure is tiny. Your best bet is to just clear in the US.

Let us know what airline you choose, as I'm thinking about doing the same next summer (going the other way).
And if you wind up at KEWR and need a ride somewhere (close), let me know... I live very close by, and if I'm home I won't mind an excuse to drive to the airport...

Last year was amazing. Limo from EWR to Manhatten. not going to happen this year though with major budget cut backs. I think we are likely to wind up doing BHX-EWR simply because of cost reasons but yes i will let you all know.

Thanx... it's only a pipe dream at this point; no idea when I'll be able to free up the time, and when i think of what it'll cost, I keep thinking I'd be better off spending it on flying. Maybe if I can rent a plane over there for a few hours, I won't feel so bad about it.
As for transportation: I'll most likely rent a car, as I plan to travel around a little bit.

Why go to Birmingham anyway, not exactly the most glamous UK City. If you can tot do some flying whilst over here.Coventry airport does fairly good flying but not so much anymore. Best bet near BHX is Wellesbourne Mountford. Look it up
