The 747-800 series.. anyone know about this?

Postby legoalex2000 » Thu Dec 22, 2005 4:22 pm

i was pondering around boeings site, trying to find more info on the 787 when i stubled upon this:

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/747fam ... round.html

It's boeing's decision to create a 747-800 series.

WHile I don't doubt that there's a bit of "product matching" involved, don't forget that one of the reasons that Boeing bought out McDonnell-Douglas was to prevent the MD-12 design from "going overseas"

Over the years there were studies to extend the 747's "hump" all the way back to add a true second passenger floor (There were even some FS models of these back in FS95/FS98 days).

The key issue in all these models is whether they can be built and operated economically.

this could be a sign of competition at it's best...

I think all it is is an improvement over the current boeing design.  I think that what it is is boeing is taking the discoveries made on wing design, engine design, etc in the development of the highly efficient 787 and applying them to the current 747 to make it more efficient, thus beating out airbus in quality instead of quantity.  IN my opinion, boeing has a better future, as the 787, developements on the 777, and future planes like the 747-8 will probably enjoy more success than the A-380

oh believe me when i say i belive you. i think airports would be a little more forgving on an aircraft that has crossed their taxiways for 30 years, they know the limitations, they know what to do. bringing in this new A380 is going to bring troubles i suspect immedately after it's relased. mostly because of the 20ft extra of taxiway space required to movie this bogie. and what i heard about a two level jetway to the plane...

I very much doubt Boeing would announce a bigger and better 747 if they wern't worried about the A380. Especially after continually saying that the future lies in long range twins instead of jumbos.

Im sure that boeing is woried about the A-380.  But its becoming clear that boeing and airbus cover different markets.  Airbus is shooting for capacity, trying to make a plane that can carry lots of people.  Boeing, on the other hand, is focusing on developing efficient, long range airplanes.

This 747 isn't meant to compete with the A380. There is a market between the 777 and the old 747, and the A380 that hasn't been covered yet. This is why they are bringing out the new 747. If Boeing were wanting to directly compete with it then they would have built a simmilar plane. ;)

No, cause that would have been obvious. I bet within a decade Boeing will announce a completely two decked 747. ;D

I dont doubt that they will. But competing isnt the aim with this one. So far Boeing have sold more planes than airbus this year, and the 787 caused airbus to rush through with the A350. They have no need to rush a competitor to the A380 at a loss, when the 747-800 can be sold into a profit making market.

I doubt it, unless the A-380 is a huge success and the 787 or 777 ER is a failure.  I have a feeling that the 787 will have a huge amount of success, so boeing will concentrate more on efficient long range than big, high capacity airliners.

You can't say that Airbus doesn't concentrate on efficient long range airliners.  Now they have the A330 & A340 series, and in 2010 the A350-800 & A350-900 will become available.  These are the real competitors to the 787, not the A380.
