She's got that classic profile, like a dolphin... I like.

They might have streamlined the hump on the fuselage a bit but it looks very much like a modified 747 to me, which is what it is. Nothing wrong with that as the 747 is my favourite long-haul airliner. Given the choice I would still pick a 747 to travel on myself. From the time I first saw one I've always thought it surprisingly graceful for an aircraft that size. The paint scheme can make a lot of difference to the look of an aircraft. Despite all the criticism of the A380 it looks very much like a whale in some photos I've seen in a specific livery.

Boeing announced it's new 747-8. Not sure if it's actually 800 or just 8. Oh well. They say it, along with the 787 are going to be the competetor to the A380. We'll see...

As they write it on their new site, its going to be known as a 747-8.
At least we know they can't shorten it down to just -8, as I think it may have been used already by someone !

The fuselage looks just about the same as before, I agree with Doug, the graphic can have quite an affect on appearance........I see an standard 747 and a SUD on the images presented, both of which are sporting an increasing dihedral wing........any model glider guiders remember the Hobie Hawk, designed by a man called Hobie Alter? Not surprisingly, also the designer of the HobieCat line of wind powered catamarans ?

the new 747 is some 13 feet longer. So thats probably 4 rows maybe more.

I would have thought they could cram at least 12 more rows into that space with the way things are on planes now.

I'm willing to bet Boeing's aircraft will turn out much better than Airbus ones. Look at the big issue with the A380 here in the U.S., many airports are not willing to spend the extra money to expand to accomidate the 380, while Boeings 747 and the new 747-8 will be able to land at most major airports witout extra accomidation.

There's no brainer that the 787 will be technically more advanced than the Airbus A380. We all know that.
But that doesnt mean the aircraft will be more succesful on the market. No one can be sure of it since Boeing has yet to get it airborne.

And it's also interesting to see the 787 has begun to take a more "conventional" appearance, far cries away from the futuristic model presented some years ago.  8)

There's room for both aircrafts on the market, it's not like the L-1011 vs DC10  ;)

This is changing the subject but I would like to know how many diffrent designs were submited before a final one was descided upon. I bet an engineers mind would filled with mind boggoling pictures of what they pictured the 787 to look like.  :)

It is interesting, but the way I look at it is this. Apparently the shape of airplanes today get the job done efficiantly and for the most part safely. So why change a good thing. I would love to see something futuristic flying through the sky's, but when it comes down to money, I dont think any airplane design firm would spend the big bucks just to get some futuristic looking airplane flying.

It's like ships on the sea, from mans first sailing to our last sailing of the sea, boats will always have a the same looking hull, would you ever expect to see a ship that looks like a box?  ;D

Hey, those Wallenius lines actually set sails out of my town (Gothenburg)
Granted they arent really jaw dropping, but they are exceptional when it comes to cramming in asian cars and Volvos  ;D

This is a big beating on Airbus. Sure, the 747-8 hold less people, but it IS 20% more fuel efficient

I wouldn't believe the statistics too much. Especially when they're for an aircraft that doesn't exist yet.
