...but why during night take-off's and landings are the flight attendants told to turn off the cabin lights?

So your eyes are well adjusted to the light outside incase of an emergency. It also helps Flight attendants see outside in an emergency.

LOL I thought it was so that they can get the passengers to go to sleep (especially those pesky kids that kick your damn chair !!! >:( >:(
