Ah well, that's another one gone. A little bird told me the same thing might happen here before long. Shoreham airport's up for sale too. ::)

We don't get ANY airshows here. The one I posted pictures from was the first one I have ever heard of within 100 miles in the last 3 years at least. They used to do "Wings over Whiteman" at an Airforce base pretty close by, but that got canceled this year due to the fact that Missouri was starting to be interesting. ::)

Doug that's terrible news :(

I can't imagine life without shoreham :'(

Same goes for the poor people in NJ, I feel for you.

A very preturbed

Pete

I wouldn't worry too much Pete. This is just one of the options recommended for a "regeneration" of the airport. Renaming it to Shoreham (Brighton City) Airport was the first step. Read details of the report here. http://www.shorehamairport.co.uk/consultationPR.asp
I suspect they're testing the waters by putting it on the market to see if there's any interest. Last option here.
Following the results of the detailed study, the joint authority member task group considered five options for the Airport's future:

To progress Option A - not build any new runways but increasing the number of aircraft traffic movements from 75,000 to up to 100,000 per annum
To progress Option B - to build a new runway with the least impact on existing housing areas and increase the number of aircraft traffic movements from 75,000 to up to 100,000 per annum
Do nothing
Close the airport as an operational aviation facility but retain the management of the land for business, leisure and retail uses
Market test the airport as a going concern, seek a private sector partner to further progress the regeneration of the airport.

I haven't heard of any prospective customers yet. This would probably depend on planning consent for realignment/lengthening the hard runway & there's a lot of local opposition to that. It's quite likely it will all come to nothing.

Whatever happens, the future of the RAFA air display is by no means certain as most of the committee members who've run it for some 18 or 19 years have retired. I heard a rumour that this year's display will be the last one in its present form. Don't know if there's any truth it it.

That's a real shame... with Willow Grove NAS going to, I don't know where I'm supposed to go for my airshows now... the ones at Wings are rather small ::)

Wow, terrible.

Same here, though I'm lucky to live in an area where the Blue Angels or Tbird visit every year. With Great Lakes NAS closing, we might not get that many Navy planes anymore.

On the bright side: Sussex Airport will still be there; they're just not putting on the show anymore... it's a nice little airport with a skydiving school. ;D
