WTF?!? A Five Engined 747-200??

Postby Hai Perso Coyone? » Wed Apr 27, 2005 9:55 am

Sorry for the sorta offensive topic title,

Could someone explain to me what's the meaning of this 5th engine in this 747? Is it anything special? Or were there always 5 engines on a 747-200?

This is the picture

Thanks,
Ashar ;)

I believe it's a method of transporting engines.

ferry pod.

That isnt very nice... :P ;D J/K

Thats an odd way to do it, I guess its cheaper than puting in a cargo plane though.

It was common on some of the long haul aircraft in the 70s and 80s in the days before there were hundreds of engines all over the world and lots of alliances and shared engineering... Seen it on BOAC VC-10s too, particularly going to the miidle/far east and africa...

the An-22 and An-124 either didn't exist or were off-limits for civil use at that time

where do you put the 5th engine on a vc10? does it just attach outboard of the normal ones?

Under the wing, same as the 747. The Conway is quite a narrow engine.
