Avgas and automotive gas have different vaporizing characterstics, as well as different additives, even though they are relatively the same. Avgas is designed for air use, so that you would not get vapor locks for example while in the air. The burning characteristics are a bit different, and therefore automotive gas can be hard on the engine. All in all, no aircraft owner should convert to automotive gas in their aircraft, i think its illegal.
Automotive gas is cheaper, and therefore i guess thats the reason why some people convert.
