IFR Cancelled?

Postby concordski » Tue Mar 15, 2005 3:47 pm

This is a bit of a stupid question, but do they really cancel your IFR in the real world if you ignore ATC? Like they do on FS2002?

Ignore ATC on an IFR flight plan in the real world and you're in for much worse consequences, such as fighter jets with missles.

Before 9/11 they would just cancel your IFR if you weren't paying attention or weren't following procedures and you were out in the middle of nowhere. If you were near a city they would get VERY loud to get you to pay attention, and eventually if you didn't they'd send an "escort." Nowadays, the immediate thing you would see would be that F-15 off your wing ordering you to land.

Just sos you know, you can cheat FS on the whole IFR cancellation thing.  Once you're at crusing alt, and the current center gives you a handoff, acknowledge it and then just don't call the next ATC station.  Your IFR flight plan will stay alive and you contact ATC whenever it's about time for you to descend.

Same goes for RL (kidding people :P)

LOL wish the same went for real life. Ya I do that on those long flights (Europe to Western US) when I need to accomplish them as quickly as possible. Takeoff, contact depature, blah climb whatever, contact whoever, acknowledge, ignore them, rate 16x, 150 miles out, contact LAX approach, fly right in. Tada!

Though 1x is much more fun!

I can imagine a pilot turning down the volume on the comm control head... and after reaching a certain range, couldnt hear the ATC!  Yikes, that would really be a bad day.   ;D
Cheers,

Well, I'm a bit of a crap pilot so I often stall at high alltitude, the worst thing is when your autopilot fails!

Surely all the passengers would die as well?

More than likely, if they did the job right. It's an unpleasant choice, but if it had been possible on Sept. 11 '01, thousands would have been spared. But the whole system was caught unawares, as they never practiced for dealing with that kind of hijacking. The gov't is not eager to allow that to happen again, so in future, the response will be quick, I'm sure. but of course they would not shoot first, then ask questions... they'd intercept and try to get them to respond normally (there are set guidelines), just in case it was a comm failure. But I suppose if the plane is clearly being aimed at a target, they'll splash it if they can.

Ya, they only consider it where the people saved would be greater than the people lost.
