Why do you call it a shame? I think it's good Boeing keeps the tradition up!

New aircraft, new name. Besides the reasons for doing this i think were a little dodgy. If you chinese airlines order our 7E7 we will rename it 787 because we know the significance of the number 8 in your culture. They could have just gone with 808 instead. ::)

Calling it the 787 is hardly the suprise of the century. It would have been the 787 whether the chinese ordered it or not.

I don't see what difference the type number makes. 787 is the next in sequence & perfectly logical. In the end it's only a reference number. I think this stems from the US manufacturers practice of rarely giving their aircraft official names. Maybe if this one becomes known as the Dreamliner rather than by its type designation this practice will die out. I wouldn't bet on it as Airbus seems to have inherited the number idea.

Names help make a plane famous, official or unofficial. Do you really think the Spitfire would have become the icon it is if it were simply called the Supermarine Type 300 or would the Merlin have become a legend among engines if it was only called the PV-12? I think not. :)

I definately agree... even with the official military designation of VC-25, or the common Boeing title of 747-200b, most people still are clueless as to what you're talking about until you mention the unofficial name "Air Force 1".  Then everyone recognizes it.  (Yes, I know Air Force One is merely the call sign for when the president is onboard.)

What comes after the 797?  Would it be the 7107 (pronounced seven tendy seven?)

Actual cockpit layout or the avionics?
Boeing has had a close relationship with Rockwell Collins in the past when it comes to the avionics design, so I guess it's either them or Honeywell/Sperry.

Regarding anything else, I'm as clueless as you

It is said to have a simmilar layout to the 777, to make the  transition as smooth as possible.

Let us hope this one will lift off succesfully before discussing about a successor!
