Dimming cabin lights for takeoff/landing?

Why do airlines do this?

My guess wouldbe to see the exit signs and to make tense passengers more relaxed...but they are just guesses

its so in the event of a forced landing/evacuation at night passengers eyes will be adjusted to the low light and can see better as your leaving the aircraft. a number of airlines also have the no window shades down during daytime takeoffs/landings policy, so thatt your not blinded by the light.
