On a mission from God?

Postby ozzy72 » Tue Feb 10, 2004 4:28 am

An excellent demonstration of how to offend people ;D I wonder how many CVs he's put out this morning? ;D

American air travellers have become accustomed, in recent years, to taking off their shoes and spreadeagling themselves for security checks, but they have drawn the line at being asked to reveal their religion by a pilot apparently on a mission from God.
The passengers on an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York on Friday expected to hear the usual banter about the weather and cruising altitudes when the pilot introduced himself on the public address system.
Instead, he spread anxiety by challenging Christians to put up their hands and urging them to discuss their faith with the other non-believers on the flight.
Karla Austin, one of the passengers, told CNN: "He said if you're Christian, raise your hand. If you're not, you're crazy."
Tim Wagner, an American Airlines spokesman, said yesterday the pilot had not meant to imply that non-Christians were crazy but was referring to "the people who had stuck up their hands at the risk of embarrassing themselves".
Very few, if any, of the passengers did raise their hands, and most looked at each other in alarm, fearing they were being flown to New York by a religious fanatic. The flight crew were bombarded with questions about what was going on and later, the pilot spoke again. Jen Dorsey, another passenger, said that he apologised for putting the flight crew under pressure because of his comments.
Mr Wagner said: "American Airlines policy and our guidelines are to make everyone feel comfortable, and we realise we live in a very diverse world. American does apologise to anyone who was made to feel uncomfortable."

I suggest that this pilot is the crazy one. The fact that he was ever allowed to become a captain of a major airline worries me. :o

PS. AA was always my preferred airline. Now I'm not so sure. It's possible this thing has been blown up out of proportion. Nothing the media likes more than spreading scare stories about aviation. It's been discussed in another thread that the airline industry seems to have a death wish. ::)

Christian extremist, what can you say?

I have always had a distaste for people who try to force things upon other people...

I agree. He had an intention, but it was a bad approach.

Well, I tend to have difficulties communicating so let me clarify. For that you have to forgive me.

I agree

I was agreeing with Jared on how it would be nice to see everyone to go to Church.

I also agree on how he shouldn

Thanks for the clarification Ranger. Your choice of the word "intention" confused me but I'm in no position to criticise. From your posts in this forum you have no trouble expressing yourself. No forgiveness necessary. ;)

Back on topic. I have my own strongly held political & religious convictions that do not necessarily agree with popular opinion. These are private & no business of anyone but me. Everyone is entitled to believe anything they wish providing they don't try to force me to conform or belittle me for not sharing their views. I regard that as discrimination. I don't try to impose my beliefs on others & object to them trying to do the same to me or anyone else. ;)

Come to think of it, there's a few people around here who fit that description quite well! ;D

And not only that, there's quite a few people here who are or have goals of becoming commercial pilots ;)
