Aviation and Automobiles

Postby Felix/FFDS » Tue Jan 06, 2004 11:33 am

The only company that - offhand - I can think of has produced both aircraft and automobiles - under the same "brand" is Ford.

Other companies that I know that have produced aircraft or engines and automobiles (again, under their own "brand") are:

BMW
Mercedes
Rolls-Royce
Packard  (albeit known for its license built RR Merlin)
Messserschmitt  (who can forget the post war 3-wheeler)
Mitsubishi

I don't include Siemens since although it built both engines (Siemens-Halske) and aircraft (Siemens-Schuckert), and is now a multi-industry, multi-national company, it did not build automobiles under its own name.

Correct - Through the fifties, FIAT still made airplanes and cars.

Also:  Hindustan (India) both autos and airplanes

A lot of car manufacturers produced aircraft during WWII. The Austin Motors factory at Castle Bromwich near Birmingham produced a large quantity of Spitfires & some Lancasters. Rover actually started manufacturing the Whittle jet engines until they were forced to hand it all over to Rolls-Royce. I once saw a Rover jet-engined car. I think this might still be in the Science Museum in South Kensington.

In Lowestoft, near me, is a company that deals in wood for builders.  They used to build gun turrets and aircraft.  Go by the name of Boulton Pau.l

I've thought of a few more.

Both Heinkel & Messerchmitt produced "bubble cars" in the late 50s. They were very popular & there was even a pop song written about them. http://www.3wheelers.com/songs.html

Alvis & Sunbeam made cars & aircraft engines. There was also a Sunbeam-Napier racing car. Napier also made aero engines.

Armstrong Siddeley manufactured a great many things including cars, aircraft & aero engines.

Howard Hughes built his own Steamer, a steam-powered car.

I am sure there are others but this will do for now. ;)

PS. I almost forgot Bristol. http://www.theautochannel.com/content/vehicles/coll/marque/bristolh.html

More car & aero engine manufacturers.

Alfa Romeo
Renault
Hispano-Suiza
Mercedes (Benz) - their famous emblem actually represents an airscrew.

Some R2800's found on CV340's and 440's, DC6's and various warbirds still retain the NASH dataplates, circa WWII. Don't forget Kawasaki, and Aeramacci(sp? )who both built motorcycles and airplanes.
.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......
