When was the first dogfight?

Yes, I am ashamed to admit it, but I don't know.  Does anyone know the details of the first recorded dogfight?

Most early WWI aircraft were 2-seaters used for observation & artillery spotting. I've read of many instances of skirmishes with nothing more than a hand-held pistol. I found this interesting article here. http://www.firstworldwar.com/airwar/summary.htm
From the use of the word airplane (not aeroplane) it was written by an American. It doesn't give details of the first actual dogfight but this appears to be the first recorded kill.

On 21 Sep 1914, two German aviators flew a reconnaissance mission carrying ther pet schnauzers as a lark.  Unfortunately, the schnauzers got a but rowdy,shall we say, and got into a fight.  Fortunately the oberver was able to restrain each, although at a cost of seriously scratched boots and pants, and the airplane's fabric was also found with appropriate rips.

Lt. Willi Becker, observer and plane captain, was seen berating the pilot, a Sgt. Luddecker, as responsible for the attacking pet.
