Obviously we've all seen the exposed feet part. Also look at his right hand. That would be the grip part of his steering wheel. and if you've seen the BMW steering wheel up close you'll know its a rather solid but of rubber wrapped around carbon fiber. The impact required to break it was incredible.

I'm still amazed that he survived that.. it's a testament to the safety of a modern F1 car. When it happened I thought he was dead, especially when his head was flopping about.  :o

Yes, it was similar, but Ratzenberger didn't roll his car as far as I can remember.
Kubica was undoubtedly saved by the HANS device which more than likely would have saved Ratzenberger too.

The whole crash of ratzenberger's was really strange. theres only a small portion of video of it so it's tough to tell what happend and how.

also notice the monster scratches on kubicas helmet, the top of the BMW logo is messed up.

I also thought he was dead, just as I thought Kathrine Legge was after her Champ Car crash in the states.

Anyone know if more manditory foot protection will be added to the cars as a result of this crash?

I'd imagine so. But then had the FIA not had the safety upgrades they demanded for the front of the tub at the start of 07 then Kubica would have likely lost his lower legs.

I'd say that weekend is still firmly implanted in many of our minds, it's only by sheer luck and a mirical that Rubens Barrichello is still here racing. His accident was a nasty one on the friday.

Started watching racing in 2001, and although I wish I had seen some of the action in the 1990's and 80's, I still feel fortunate that I have never watched a driver die on live TV (got pretty close in 2003 with Brack though)

Quite. Mind you, I suspect too many people are completely ignorant of the fact two drivers died that weekend.

To be fair, the media are to blame for this.
Whenever they mentoin the imola weekend it's always Senna's name thats brought up, not ratzenbergers.
