What a twonk, then he'd get an executive jet to fly him from Brussels to Germany whilst his chauffeur would drive his Mercedes (a big fat not fuel efficient car) across the EU to meet him at the airport
Frankly the only thing the EU has got right is removing restrictions in trade and work. The rest seems to be a bit of a mess IMHO.......

I can see this law being passed ........ mainland Europe will ignore it completely ..... here in the UK it'll be implemented without question, or scrutiny and to the letter.

Most speed limits, especially the UK's, were set when drum brakes, skinny tyres and 2 ton cars were the norm... it took an age to stop from 70 mph, so the limits made a BIT of sense.

With todays technology they'll stop in a far shorter distance from 120 mph than 70 mph in even the 1970s...

Cars are much safer now than they ever were.. and will probably get safer still.

That might be so but, apart from motorways, the speed limits on most roads in the UK have been drastically reduced over the last few years & this is not likely to get any better. 20 mph has been seriously suggested for built-up areas. Motorways aren't too bad at weekends but at other times there is generally a hold-up of some kind, caused by road works, an accident or simply the sheer volume of traffic so raising the speed limit would be impractical anyway.

What Hagar says is true. Here in Holland most speed limits are reduced too. In a lot of build-up / residential area you're not allowed to do more than 30 kmh (used to be 50) and outside of town a lot of secondary roads are restricted to 60 kmh (used to be 80). Highways around major cities like Rotterdam are restricted to 80 kmh (100 before). Can't say why this was done without getting into a political rant.

So why would anybody still want to own a car that can go faster than the proposed 162 kmh? Sure it's not cool to admit you're new Ferrari can't go faster than the three year old Deawoo of the next door neighbours. On the other hand you can't use the full potential of the Ferrari anywhere either....... unless you live in Germany.

several things, 1: people will drive them fast anyway, its just knowing where and when.
2: because owners of these cars take them to track days where they can drive them flat out much faster than the national speed limit. Tracks like Bedford aerodrome, Goodwood and Castle combe you can top 150mph in a half decent car. And thats what the general public are forgetting. These people buy these cars because they know that they can blitz them round the track for a small fee.
