Motorcycles are really dangerous.  I know a few people who have had pretty bad accidents.

One of my teachers in high school got in an accident where his foot was "de-gloved" (imagine your skin and flesh are a glove on your foot, and you take the glove off), he said the paramedics told him not to look at his foot, but he did anyways, and he saw the skeletal structure of the front half of his foot.  They had to amputate his foot, but he is slowly getting back into the activities he used to do, like biking, skiing, and hiking.

 Another teacher of mine had a motorcycle accident where he was hit by a drunk driver and he was very broken and in the hospital for a long time, in a coma for a while.  One of his legs was actually shortened, they took out a two inch portion of his lower leg, and had to bolt him back together.  He also had to have a tracheotomy and all kinds of other nasty stuff while he was in the hospital.  He used to ski alot, so now he uses a mono-ski, which is like a snowboard, except you stand on it like it was two skis fused together.  He also has to get shoes specially made, one with a riser in it because one leg is shorter than the other.

 Another is a guy I work with, who was riding his motorcycle, and he took off from a stop too fast and flipped backwards, and I know he broke at least his arm, maybe more, but I can't quite remember.

 Something I noticed though, is that motorcycle accidents are often caused by other drivers not giving motorcycles the room and respect they need.  People need to be more careful when driving, most are too involved with other things to notice the things going on around them, and it is even harder to notice something as small as a motorcycle.

This video really does portray how dangerous motorbikes can be.
My dad, who used to have himself a superbike (Triumph TT600 to be exact, lovely bike), and he slipped off of it going around a roundabout (try saying that 10 times fast!  :P :D)
Fortunately he was only traveling at 10mph, and got away with a bruised leg.
However, had there been another car going too fast around the roundabout, it could have been much worse......

- Mobius, some really very sad stories there. Shame about your high school teacher having his foot amputated.....

Biking is perfectly safe. It is all the morons in boxes on their mobiles trying to kill you that is the biggest danger... I'm sure Fozzer will back me up on this ;D

Bike can be driven safely, but the fact remains that the biker is still subject to the traffic around him. In a car you're better protected. The slightest mishap on a bike can have serious consequences! So, as a car-driver, I always take note of them and give them the room they need...

You are a rare driver Kris. Most British drivers are hell bent on killing those of us on 2 wheels.... personal enemies are Volvo, BMW, Mercedes and Indian women in Datsuns!

I've been riding all sorts of motor-bikes for 56 years now....
...accident free...

On a bike, over the years its amazing how used you get to observing everything around you, including the condition of the road surfaces....
I am constantly aware of the fact that my brain is working overtime, taking in and anticipating every possible dangerous situation around me, well in advance..... 8)...!

The skill learnt in safe motorcycling can make motorists better drivers... ;)...!

It takes many years to get it right...

I love all my bikes...and the freedom they give me ensures enormous pleasure!

Cheers all...!

Paul...Motorcycling is the nearest you will ever get to the experience of flying a Tiger Moth... ;)... ;D...!

I like to think I'm a thoughtful driver too. I used to ride motorbike so I know what it's like. Unfortunately not all motorcyclists (or pedal cyclists) are the saints they would have us believe so please don't come that old chestnut with me. :P ::)

I have to agree Doug that many two-wheelers are piloted by no-brainers and frankly get everything they deserve.
My three crashes are as follows;
Diesel spilt on roundabout, bike totalled, councils liability (no compensation as I couldn't prove how long the stuff had been there!)
Roundabout in wet conditions, first time out on my big boy bike and I nailed the throttle hard and ended up on my side, my fault completely for being a twit!
T-boned by silly blonde cow in Fiesta on her phone, her fault but the police let her off and I had to go to court to get the insurance money to fix my front forks!
The skill learnt in safe motorcycling can make motorists better drivers

And that is why people with a bike licence get cheaper car insurance in the UK Paul (and was one of the main reasons I learnt to ride along with getting over my fear of bikes following a scary accident as a kid) ;)

There are two grades of motorcycle accident;
1) biker lying on the road groaning "How is my bike?" - not bad will recover
2) biker lying on the road not making noise - dead ;D
