im after some new wheels..can you help?

Postby elwellnick24 » Wed May 25, 2005 3:22 pm

ok guys, after some serious thought ive decided to finally look for an american muscle car. The plan is to use it at the strip, and sunny days...  ive been to look at two '67' mustangs this last weekend, but they werent exactly worth what was being asked for them.... so the hunt goes on! my favour to ask is for all you usa folk really... can you give me an idea what a good mk 1 mustang, a dodge charger and mercury couger are going for in your neck of the woods? the reason being i may well end up importing one if i cant find any decent ones here. basically i want a fairly standard one, but minor mods would be ok. cheers guys, nick (in the land of the ford fiesta.... :'()

look for a 1969 mustang, or even a 1969 camaro. This is something richie knows alot about so he might be able to best help you.

they probably would be very very expensive in england. over here good condition:

mk 1 mustang - depends on what you want. the price is any where from $9,000-$33,000 for a good first gen mustang (non boss/shelby/mach) (early shelby 350's are between $40g-60g; 500's start in the $60g's) (mach 1's go for $25-50g) (boss 302's start at $40g and boss 429's start at $70g)

Dodge charger 68-72 chargers are all over the place in price, but for a good condtion 440 R/t expect to be north of $27,000 up to about 50g for a nice 68 rt, and hemis are rediculous ($68,000 and up)!

mercury couger 67-70 289s: are going for about $10,000-$13,000 in "good" condition
Sincerely,
Me

You also have to remember about the price of gas as well.  I don't want to change your mind or anything (IMHO there's nothing better than an American Muscle Car) but keep in mind that these cars don't get much better than 10-15 mpg.  With the price of gas over in England, thats deffinately something worth considering.

cheers guys, i reckon im gonna go for a mustang. im not really bothered about fuel consumption as it would only be used for the strip and the odd sunny weekend. besides, my little peugeot 205 only manages about 20 mpg, so im used to it!! although i know a big v8 will be even thirstier...
having given it some thought i suppose im looking for a car in good condition, bodywork/running gear being more important than engine condition as i'll probably be building an engine myself. my budget is about

Sorry all you American Muscle Car fans, but, having driven all types of crazy cars over the years, one car stands out from all the others.

BMW E30 M3.

If I had the money for a spare car and, a track pass, there is no other car that comes close imo.

Except, perhaps, an M3 CSL.  ;)

I suppose it depends if you want to wallow , or, go round corners.

BTW, 20mpg from a Pug 205? Has that got the landy's old V8 in it? :P     ;D

I used to have a very hard driven 1.9GTI, yet that gave a consistent 30MPG!

the whole point of the old american muscle car is raw power though, its not about creature comforts or how well it performs going round a corner. Hell the Dodge charger struggles to stay in a straight line. Awesome car ;D

Volvo-great car.  Sturdy, safe, reliable, fast.

Or try a Mazda MX-3.  It is a great starter car-  You learn alot from it.  Like corrosion, and how to fix the unfixable.

Any car that can't stay in a straight line is a very bad design.
Plus, 240hp from eight cylinders is simply pathetic.

Chargers can stay in a straight line, I've driven them-they're a lot of fun.  They are a large car that has very poor handling, but they are fast.

BUt 240hp, they have more than that.  The performance V8s they had ranged from 335-425hp.  They had a 318ci V8 motor that had around 240-but it was an economy engine with a 2-bbl carb-not intended for performance use.
