GEX Still Worth It?

Postby usapatriot » Sun Feb 28, 2010 9:14 am

I finally bought FSX Gold Edition and installed it on a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64. I have also installed REX. Now I am considering purchasing GEX NA for FSX. It it still worth it for $34.99 or is there something better out there?

Since I had UTX for Canada and USA already installed, I installed GEX North America over them.

GEX USA/Canada has just been updated (lots of textures have been replaced). The new version is available from today.

So which one would you recommend for North America, GEX or UTX? Right now I'm just looking for continental U.S. coverage. :)

If you're making a choice, go with UTX USA then add UTX Canada.

I can say they are not the same thing, although the explanation escapes me at the moment. GEX is quite framerate friendly. But I have read there is an order in which to install for best results.  :)

From what I see, UTX is the essential and GEX makes it more complete by adding extra textures.

UTX is sort of an underlying foundation relative to GEX. Specifically, UTX corrects coastlines, roadways, rivers, railroads and adds some landclass layers to correct which land is rural, urban, industrial, etc. Additionally, they add new land classifications for universities, sports arenas, cemetaries and others.

In contrast, GEX is a total replacement of all the ground textures. It is a major overhaul of FSX. It makes what you see much more convincing and I find it very aesthetically pleasing. To me, UTX + GEX + REX is a fantastic combination and I feel that GEX is defintely worth the money.
