Have you tried the Type Rating lessons from the PMDG website?

PMDG models can be very hard on your patience, since proper operation requires studying the manuals. If all you want to do is boot up FS and go flying, there are many good freeware big jet liners to download which you can fly with a minimum preparation. I have done this myself, and I ensure you that I had a good time and was able to learn one or two things while I was at it. Happy landings included.
If on the other hand you are serious about airline simulation, then studying those manuals should not be a nuisance, but on the contrary, it should be an interesting task. Just don't think you can jump in the cockpit of the Queen of the skies and instantly become Master Pilot in Command, it takes time, but I think it's rewarding in the end.
You can always fantasize about taking a 747 flight and rescue yourself and the passengers sitting in at the yoke after the whole crew got sick for eating decayed fish.  :D
Either way, I don't see why you should give up simflying, if it's something you enjoy doing.

This only happens when you watch one too many times "Airplane", though. ;D ;D ;D

I was at a point of setting up my own FMC workshop but I was too lazy, though I'm more than delighted to help you step by step. Do you have MSN? We could go through the whole plane together :D
