General discussion about payware add-ons

Whole earth mesh.

Postby Jimbo » Sun Nov 20, 2005 7:05 pm

Hi,

Ive been looking at this mesh, used it alot....

http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

But there is simply no way i can download all of that, its too much.
So im wondering is there anyway payware with all this together on one dvd disk?
The same mesh, or similar?

Many thanks.

I've been slowly downloading it between other addons.

So far, i've downloaded about half of North America, approx 500 mb.

With my luck, I won't finish before a future version of FS is released where it's incompatible ;D

I never used those. Too much work and the mesh seems to interfere with the default NYC mesh.

First it says mesh for the whole world, then it says only for 60 degree's either side of the equator..... Hmm....

For myself, I'm really picky about meshes.  They seem to interfere with my scenery!

Jimbo

We have several terrain meshes you could take a look at if you come to the YAS Christmas fair at Leeds grammar school on the 18th December. You can try before you buy at Skysim Limited.

I've just ordered this from Abacus Software:

"What makes for extreme landscapes?

Normally, Flight Simulator elevation info for the world is accurate to about 1220 meters.

World Extreme Landscapes boosts the resolution to 38.2 and 76.4 meters depending on the geographic area, thereby delivering up to 128 times the visual accuracy.

Below you'll see how much more detail is revealed when the elevation data points are closer together instead of 1220 meters apart. The resulting landscape is modeled even closer to reality and brings you an incredible visual flight.

With Microsoft Flight Simulator you can effortlessly travel to places that most of us only dream about. Flying the simulator is a certainly a great way to visit the world. From the dizzying heights of the Himalayas to the dense jungles of the Amazon and from the picturesque Alps to the remote, rugged headwaters of the Nile, there's an endless supply of adventures awaiting you.

By simply adding World Extreme Landscapes you'll instantly transform these places into even more magnificent views. Based on Flight Simulator's adaptable elevated mesh terrain technology, we've boosted the detail up to 128-fold. We've replaced the default elevation data with super refined 76 meter (and 38 meter in some locations) information. The result is an incredible scenic accuracy bringing the Flight Simulator experience even closer to reality.

Step up to the heightened specatacles that World Extreme Landscapes brings to your flights.

Additionally, for your "flightseeing" pleasure you'll fly our pre-planned tours in a brand new Vans RV-6A. "

3 DVDs, 14 GB, $30.00 USD. I'll let you folks know if it was a good purchase. I'm looking forward to my birthday present this year. ;)

Happy birthday to me! 41 years old, I had no clue I would live this long.

Anyway My new toy arrived in a speedy manner, allowing me to play with it before Christmas on my newest system - 2.7 Ghz P4, 1Gb Ram, 80Gb Hdd, ATI Radeon 9600 series video card with 128 MB on board. It moves right along.

Using FS2002 Professional, I'm getting 40fps with ease before installing Extreme World Landscapes. I could probably get more out of the card, but why? It is as smooth as a babies bottom in downtown New York City with all the settings maxed out. CFS, CFS2, and CFS3 all play at over 150fps with its detail settings maxed as well.

Just to make sure I knew what things looked like before installing the addon, I took a quick flight from San Fran Intl.  to Lake Tahoe. There is plenty of hills which turn into mountains along the route, so I figured it would be easy to spot diferences.

After a fairly easy installation process, I was firing up FS2002 Pro and sitting in a Beech V35 on runway 1 at San Fran Intl. in no time. After doing the shift-z thing twice so I could check the frame as I flew to Lake Tahoe, I pushed the throttle full forward and away I went.

At a fairly descent climb to 12,000 (right around 750fpm) I came to the first hills. I glanced briefly at the frame rate - still holding at 40fps, and continued to climb. The hills were sharper, and there was far more of them. I thought " ok, not too bad, not the greatest, I can live with this... not bad for $30.00 USD". I was shocked when I entered the mountains. Wow. That is the only thing at comes to mind. Sharp crisp peaks with way more jagged slopes, each unique in form and size. Incrediable. The frame rate never blinked - right at 40 fps.

Another flight was difinately in order, some where I knew the lay of the land - meaning it would have to be close to home. Pennsylvania was no longer Indiana/western Ohio east. Before, it was as flat as a pancake, with just a few scattered hills thrown in to let you know you weren't in Ohio... yet. Quite pittiful. It always angered me how FS98 actaully had better mesh than FS2000 or FS2002 for my local area. AT last, the rolling hills are now where they should be - including the mad climb to head east from Jimmy Stewart Airport towards Capital City Airport (Harrisburg).

Overall I am tickled - but remeber I never played with FS Global or any other terrian mesh addon. The three DVDs will save me years of download time, the airplane included doesn't hurt my feelings either. It was a good birthday/Christmas present.
