How do you do it?

Postby Jakemaster » Fri Dec 30, 2005 9:27 am

Jeez, now that Ive exerienced the payware market, how do you handle it?  I mean, buying the MAAM DC-3 was quick, I knew I wanted it, but after I got it I was like 'ooops!  I shoulda got this, or this, or this"  I spent 2 hours thinking about what I had done before I realized I made the right decision.  Then it took me all night basically to finally decide to get the PMDG 1900!  How do you handle the pressure?!

Well there was a time before I had to play catch up from being out of work for a few months that I would buy anything that looked good. Sometimes 10+ paywares a month.

Now...thankfully Christmas and my birthday are close together, my trusty gf has bought me a few paywares that I wanted because I can barely afford a pot to p*** in as my dad used to say lol

Surely this depends on what you can afford. People are faced with the same decisions every day & if they want something badly enough they will save up until they can afford it. This is how it used to be & many people now buy lots of things they can't afford or never really needed through the wonderful concept of living on credit. ::) ;)

I still work on the old-fashioned concept of knowing exactly what I want & saving up for it until I can afford to get it. It might take a long time but when I finally get what I wanted I appreciate it all the more. ;)

What they both just said..........
Ask......Research........Ask again.......And look at what has been posted in the galleries.....Customer service has to very high on the list of where to buy.......Most addons are approaching an average of $45.00 to 50.00.....
What other addons do have or want? FsPassenegers or Cargo?
Buy to do what you do most......

I'm sure that Savas will agree that he has alot sitting on his hard drive that he hasnt' flown in along time. Iknow I've slowed down.....alot!
And get a Debit card!....Or one of those pay as you go credit cards!    You cant' spend it if aint' on the card.
Hope this helps.....My young "I've been bitten by the payware bug" newbie!

My machine cost me $3,000.

The payware I have bought over the past 2 years is more than that now!

Oddly enough regarding payware I havent used in ages, Ive been using a lot more lately. Reason is because of fspassengers.

Granted FsP isnt for everyone, but for someone that wants a bit more immersion and a reason to fly, it really adds to what you get out of the sim, and because of that, payware GA, and jets that were put on the back burner ages ago, have been dusted off and reused.

Reason for the latter is when you start off with something like $30,000 in FsP with a 1 to 3x modifier on what funds you make, it takes forever to buy something larger and you want to increase your fleet of aircraft in case one needs maintenance, or you dont have enough money to repair one that had a gear that didnt come down or have a bird strike and had to do an emergency landing only to find that the cost to repair your aircraft is more than you have in your company bank.

I have found some payware that I forgot I had and am now enjoying them again.

Granted like Dave said, there are some bad choices that we have made, but for me they are quite in the minority of wasted money, and then there are those payware add-ons that we bought ages ago only to have a developer come along that makes something better.

EDIT and to respond to Dave, whats worse is when you are a payware addict and come into hard times financially for one reason or another. You see great payware that you really want and cannot get because even $20 to 30 would be better spent on bills that require catching up on. instead of seeing 'new payware' and going out and buying it asap, I now have to think "I have enough to enjoy".

Thankfully as I have said in the past, my gf knows how much I enjoy simming and every so often when she sees one that I really REALLY like, and she has a few beans to spare, she gets it for me. Its been a hard decision a few times though

I really dont get this "payware addict" stuff.

Seems like you guys are just buying stuff just for the heck of it...then use it for a few days, only to leave it in the hangar collecting dust.

Think how many hours in a real aircraft you could get for those 1000's of dollars.  ;)

Nicholas,
It is pretty simple.
I don't buy payware to "brag" or say things like, "I am an addict" or "I need everything".

I only started buying payware a few years ago after my 1st Eaglesoft purchase.

It comes down to this.

I make decent money. I love my simulator and have invested allot in it. I love allot of the freeware stuff out there. Some of it is equivalent or better than some of the stuff I have bought.

It is like anything.

Since I can afford it, I like to by it. Why do people buy anything? Why do people collect anything.
It is for their own personal hobby and interests.
Yes, it may be an obsession but I love it!

I don't whip out my credit card so quickly these days as like I said, I have at least 1 piece of Payware from every developer out there and I am more wise now to pay up.

But I know that many of the developers who create great scenery add ons & aircraft will surely get a look from me!

It is amazing to fly from Georender's Skykomish Airport in Washington. Below is Ultimate terrain giving me lit roads, deep canyons, detailed coastlines and flowing streams as far as the eye can see. My Active Sky weather engine is constantly giving me the latest real weather conditions as flight environment is keeping my skies always changing! A Dreamfleet Baron with all the latest GPS from Simflyer is guiding me along as I gaze down on my 38meter mesh from Real Scene. I look below at Seattle's most busy airport and it is buzzing with hundreds of AI Aircraft moving about compliments of Ultimate Traffic. As I fly North into Vancouver, the latest scenery add on from FS Add On is a buzz with ships, buildings, lighthouses and factories. While all this is going on around me, the services of FS-GS is constantly running its magic in the background to assure I have a seamless and fluid flight. It is time to get back as Flight environment slowly changes my skies from light to dark and Active Sky is supplying me with multiple layers of different clouds. Looking below FSScene gives me the colors of the season for my ground textures. Wait, I am low on fuel to return to Skykomish Washington! I head toward Georender's Orcas Island. As I see it in the distance there are moving sail boats in the bay and GA aircraft doing touch and gos. As I adjust my flaps and am about to land at Orca Island, A humpback whale jumps out of the water below me! My wheels touch down and I am home.

Just another flight in my Flight Sim World.....

$66.00 per hour for a Cessna 152
$85.00 per hour for a Cessna 172
Thats here in Phoenix Az.
So....what is that?....About 15hrs in the 152...11 in the Skyhawk.
But.....Whats' it cost to rent a 737-700..."Left seat"?and fly to some new place and shoot ILS's till you run out of fuel?

Dave, sounds very wonderful, but it's not worth the 100s of dollars.

If you ever come to Sweden, I'll take you on a REAL scenic flight in the western archipelago, and maybe you'll realize why I have a hard time of being so excited about FS scenery design.
I'm just happy as long there's a ralistic panel  ;D

And to Cody, for 700 dollars you and your friend can get almost 1.30hrs of level D simulator time.
It's worth every penny.  8)

Ive said it before...

The reason I spent so much for simming and not real flying is because I cannot become a real pilot. I have a medical condition from bashing the back of my head against a metal trashcan as a kid from falling from the upper bunk bed that has permanent damage. Means if I have sudden head movement (ie rollercoasters, skydiving, flying, race car driving, getting in a fight, etc I could black out.) I am not sure anyone below me while I fly high above would like for me to crash a plane and possibly kill someone because I hit heavy winds and blacked out.

So, simming is as close as I can get to being a real pilot and being an artist means I use a vivid imagination. I might be staring at a screen, but I can in my mind get as close to actually flying as I can forgetting the world around me.

its my hobby and each payware I have bought I have used and most I continue to do so. I like variety. I would rather spend $50 on a virtual aircraft rather than $1000 for a baseball signed by some dude that some perceive as being famous. To me that ball is worthless. To another its priceless.

Spending $50 for an airplane is the equivalent of a tank and 1/4 of gas for my car. Dinner for 1.5 people at a decent sit down restaurant that is nothing to write home about. its 5 movie tickets and a small drink and pop corn that equates to about $5 hour to watch movies. if I spend 100 hours enjoying a plane its 50 cents an hour.

Like Dave said, why do we spend money on anything? Because we want something.

PS I say I am a payware addict because its something several people called me and I look back and say, "yeah I suppose I am, but its better than crack, heroin, or cheap nasty beer like Budweiser"
