FS2002 Loading troubles

Postby M.D.1954 » Sat Jan 22, 2005 4:26 am

Dear All,

Allow me to share my problem with you and seek for your advice. Out of a sudden, FS2002 starts to load, but few secs later, the h/d activity stops and nothing else happens.
I dont recall having installed lately any scenery or mesh, maybe few AI aircrafts.
Otherwise, all  directories seem ok.
I have reinstalled FS002 and added back the scenery and aircrafts folders, but no improvement.

Your valued assistance is highly appreciated.

Hi MD. My first thought is that this is caused by something else, not necessarily FS2002 at all. Think of anything you've changed or installed to your system since FS2002 last ran properly. I have no knowledge of WinXP myself but most people seem to use it these days.  I've heard it mentioned that one of the SP updates can affect FS2002. If you did this recently it might be worth trying the System Restore feature to revert back to when FS2002 last worked properly.

This is only a guess & someone else might have a better suggestion.

Thanks Hagar for your prompt reply,

I run indeed WinXP, but didn't install SP2 or have installed something recently. Ran as well system restore but without success.

Right. I couldn't help noticing this.
I have reinstalled FS002 and added back the scenery and aircrafts folders, but no improvement.
I wouldn't recommend adding anything to a freshly installed program until you're certain it runs properly.

If you have enough free space on your HD I suggest you do a duplicate install of FS2002. First rename the FS2002 directory folder on your HD to any other name. "FS2002 old" or similar. The name doesn't matter but this does 2 things. It backs up FS2002 & hides it from the setup program. Now insert the CD & install in the usual way. Try the fresh install before adding anything to it. If it runs OK you can transfer your addons gradually from the original install before deleting it.

hi M.D.
welcome to the forums.

anyway, this prblm has happend to me as well. there is a possibilty. do you have Active Camera v1.1 installed? if you left the sim in the External pilot view, the makers said that the sim is liable to crash. so i recommend to uninstall Active Camera 1.1 and then try the sim. then if u wish, install Active Camera again.

this should work if you have Active Camera.

cheers

Hi Ashar,

Thanks your welcome! Regretfully, I dont have active camera.

I wonder where in fs2002.cfg is the line\command stating where and which aircraft are default.

Could you direct me to that place?

MD

I set FS2002 on the default flight at Meigs to check this out. This is the only entry I can find in FS2002.cfg. The flight is named fltsim.flt

[USERINTERFACE]
MAP_ORIENTATION=2
PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=1
PROMPT_ON_EXIT=1
LessonsLevel=0
LessonsTitle=0
SelectFlightLevel=11
SelectFlightTitle=0
PageID=3
OpenATCOnCreate=0
SITUATION=C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT GAMES\FS2002\FLIGHTS\other\fltsim

I still think my previous suggestion of a duplicate install is the easiest & quickest way to fix your problem. I'm almost certain it will work. If you get it up & running transfer your addons separately, not all at once or the problem will probably be transferred with them.

Hagar, I certainly will adopt your recommendation. I just wanted to make sure my settings are still the ones required. They haven't been so by the way, I edited them but again without sucess ( apart a longer h/d activity time ?! ).

Having around 2,880 aircrafts (incl. AI) and numerous sceneries, I just think about the (one at once) installation which might take weeks (?) if after each and each installation FS to be tested. Is it correct?

Cheers

:o That seems an incredible amount of addons. My first thought is, do you need them all? I suspect the sheer number of addons is partly the cause of your problem. There must be a limit to everything. I've forgotten what it is now but I believe there's a limit to the number of areas in Scenery.cfg. Nothing to do with me but I can't imagine how you could possibly use half of those aircraft. If you don't fancy transferring them individually, try doing it in batches. Then check out FS2002 before adding any more. Otherwise the whole thing is just a complete waste of time & you'll be back where you started.

Hagar and Commoner,

The culprit have been found. When reloading my aircraft library, I have found an AI aircraft, the Embraer EMB145 with a totally garbbled aircraft.cfg file. This one prvented FS2002 from loading.
How this aircraft managed to "invite" itself into the library, I will probably never know. Could it be an intrusion from some kind? a trojan???

Your willingness to be of help is much appreciated.

Yours,
MD

Hi MD. Glad you fixed the problem. I very much doubt that the culprit aircraft installed itself or that a trojan is to blame. That EMB145 is possibly part of an AI package (PAI?). With the amount of aircraft you have it's quite possible you installed it yourself & simply forgot. :o :P ;)

PS. 2,880 aircraft is beyond my imagination. I can't think how you can keep track of anything like that amount. I've been doing this for a few years now & I never had over 100 aircraft installed at any one time to any version of FS.

Hi Hagar,

2880 aircrafts including AI ones. Around 33 "flyable", all other AI. This is all the excitment I believe, maneuvering in heavily populated airport and skies.
You might be right, this emb145 is most certaily a by-product of an unsuccessfull package installation sometime. Most important, it has been identified and wipped off.  :)

I agree the AI traffic is one of the best things about FS2002/4 but 2,847 different types of AI aircraft seems a tad excessive to me. I'm surprised that FS2002 can handle that many. You could have the same amount of traffic with far less variations & not notice the difference.

Indeed. Quite how you managed to track it down will remain a mystery to me.
