umm wind leg....

well there's a departue, crosswind, downwind, base, and final leg.  All of these are flown 1/2 mile (not nm, mile) off of the runway.  I would give you a detailed step by step on traffic patterns but I'm sure someone here can give you a link...

If they don't I'll be back and I'll give you info, it's just it's basically impossible to explain a traffic pattern well without a diagram.

Take the Traffic Pattern lesson, it'll explain everything.

I have a related question to this post (and it's basic):  I understand traffic pattern basics and air traffic instructions, but when they tell me (on approach to an airport) to "fly left downwind" or "fly right downwind", i am confused. i know what "downwind" means, I just dont understand which side you enter from...whose left or whose right do they mean?? thanks

Ahhh. Ok. Lets say youre approaching runway 9 from its left side. And the traffic pattern is a left standard. So you'd intercept the downwind leg on the left side of RW 9. Other times, it may be a right standard pattern, and Then they would give you instructions to enter "right crosswind". :)

Basically, it means make left turns in the pattern.  Simple.  If they say "make right downwind", enter it from a side (on a 45 degree angle of course) where you will be making right turns in the pattern.

Being a student pilot comes in handy!  I never used to know this much!  :D
