Hard landings?

Postby NiTr0 » Fri Sep 03, 2004 4:03 pm

Where are some hard runways? I want one in the mountains, stuff like that, I havent been able to find any yet.

Anyone know of any hard ones?

Try plugging some of these into your startup.  VNLK is one of my favorites.

VQPM
TFFJ
SESM
SEAM
PAVD
NZQN
NZMF
LYTV
LSZS
LSGS
LPMA
LIPB
ENSR

ENOV
ENHV
BIVM (Beautiful)
BIIS
VNLK (Completly mental)
Try 'Luang Namtha' in LAOS.

There's a hard runway at Innsbruck in amongst lots of mountains.  Try an ILS landing there! ;D

OMG, the airport inside the dormant volcano is just insane.

At first I did not think I was going to be able to clear the ridge after takeoff.  I am sure if you flew out of there regularly, you would have the process down.

I just kept asking myself, why.  Why would anyone build an airport in a location like that?  It's not like the surrounding terrain is unmanageable.

My altimeter did not seem to be working right as well.  When I was landing it indicated almost 3K as my wheels touched the strip.

There is one I remember trying in Canada, just across the US Border somewhere north of Montana (or was it Idaho?). I did this long cross country thing where I began in Southern California, bouncing from one airport to another between Ontario Int'l and Blythe (and almost everything in between) and then continuing north until I ended up in Canada. I tried landing on this one little airstrip that is on a small, flat plateau surrounded by trees (which are sort of in the way on final approach) and it has a high mountain ridge on one side near a river. I couldn't seem to get it right even after circling the strip a number of times.

I know this doesn't really help you, (sorry, but it was a long time ago and I don't remember which one it was)but I thought I'd share this little senario anyway.

If anyone has added the "New Improved" Rock of Gibraltar, you should try landing on the top of the mountain, and then set yourself up on the side opposite the airfield, hit full throttle and just let your plane roll off the edge and go flying. You might drop a little bit, but you should have built up enough speed by the time you reach the edge that you shouldn't have a problem. I don't know why I did this, but upon landing on top of it, it just seemed like something fun to try.

Yawsome, where is the one in the volcano located?

It is in the top 5 or 6 of the list above.  It might not be a volcano, but it sure looks like it.

You are way down inside a mountain with steep walls all around.  I had to complete quite a few 360s after takeoff just to get out of it.  The best part was landing.  I approached low and dropped down over the edge down along the inside wall.  I made a left approach but should have come in from the other side due to the end of the runway being so close to the wall.  It was fun but I still don't understand why someone would build it there.

I had to dig this out of the Archives.......but I was mulling about Afghanistan and found a runway that rivals anything I've seen yet. I haven't noticed it on any of the dangerous airport threads.      OATQ Taluqan

The nice thing about the location is that if the runway isn't long enough for the aircraft .....you'll end up flying regardless!!
Try it in a fully loaded 747!!
.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......

Always looking for more fun ones.  Do terrorists shoot at you?

Edit - No terrorists, but a real hoot.  Watch that first step!

I'm basically lazy so what's the secret to taking off in a fully loaded 747?  Back up 100 yards?  I used HDG 84 and had to dump 90% of my fuel and spool up to 110% to get over the hill.

I think Ozzy might have done it in an AN-225!  Try that! :D
