A340-500 flap problem

Postby xinmayu » Mon Aug 02, 2004 11:52 pm

Hi, guys

I like to fly the new A345 from Changi to Newark. However, when i just final approch Newark, i discover a problem.

The flap seems doesnt work from 15 degree onwards. So i have to land it with 200kts speed with a big AOA.

Anybody can help here. It is really too fast on the runway, hard to stop it.

Thanks

Is this just happening at the end of the flight? Or does it happen during takeoff or whatnot also?

If this is fixable you should find a entry in the aircraft cfg file that describes how the flaps are supposed to move, but this might be a problem with the model itself and if that is the case there is no way to correct it.
I know that the flaps have to made during building along with the aninmation but I am not sure where the actual limits are set at. There is a entry in the aircraft cfg file that controls the flaps but I am not sure if this is where the actual limits of the flaps are set. 8)

It is where the limits of the flaps are set. Though the animations could look as though the flaps went only 10 degrees, you can tell FS they are dropping as far as you want. Check the aircraft.cfg file under flaps and see what the last position is.

Okay I am curious if the animation only shows 10 degrees of flaps what good does it do tho have a entry that says 30 degrees. If I understand what you are saying the model is only going to look as if the flaps are at 10 degrees.
Would the entry add more drag to simulate the added flaps.

I am just saying that the visual model has no effect on what the sim thinks. The model could be the size of a Volkswagon, but as far as the sim goes, it could be a 747 if the parameteres were right. This is why in some older airplanes, you would crash against buildings or AI aircraft without getting close enough for a visual part to actually hit them. ::)

OK I understand I thought that might be the case.
 Thanks for the info.
I just did not know if the actual model set some kind of limit. I was not sure where the entries in the aircraft cfg file actually came from I knew you had to set the contact points and weights and balance yourself but was not sure if you had to set everything.

Seems all A345s i can find on the web have this problem. when it is cruising, it is OK. But when it comes to landing, the flap becomes useless. normally a A343 can land with full flap at 150kts. But this one land with full flap at 200kts. cant be slower anymore because almost stall. anyone else had this experience?

I have checked the entries mentioned by you guys, but i dont see any problem, or I dont understand this thing at all. I am sorry, but is there anybody who has solution for this? I just need the answer. For example, how to modify the aircraft.cfg?

Thanks

xinmayu,

I downloaded a randon A340 (this was a -300) and yes, I had the same issue - at 400 feet above the runway I was at 220kts at full flaps. Fixed it though; this is what I did:

- open aircraft.cfg using Notepad (make a backup first if you haven't done this before)

- find the [flaps.0] section. (there's sometimes a [flaps.1] and [flaps.2] also - these can control leading edge slats etc. Make the changes there also.)

- change the drag_scalar parameter from 1.000 (where it probably is) to 1.500. Also change the pitch_scalar parameter from 1.000 to around 2.500. Then save.

This should cure the problem by making the flaps more effective.

:)
