FS2002 menu bar

Postby Jamie » Sat Jun 12, 2004 4:13 pm

Hi ,

I recently downloaded an Abacus airplane for trial and didn't like the  fact that it had no nice wing views , etc. and deleted .  ' Abacus ' remains on my menu bar and I would like to remove it .  How does one go about that ?  I don't care for a vendor who leaves items like that in my PC .

Thanks ,

Jamie

If you had to install this air plane then you should have uninstalled it & not just deleted it. Try to click on the start button in lower left hand corner then click on control pannel then add remove programs and try to remove the program it  will come up with an error and somtimes give you an option of removing the file from the list.
If it does not then reinstall it and then uinstall it.
A word to the wise any program that you have to install NEVER NEVER delete doing so can cause major problems the next time you start up your system.Programs tie together in ways you can not imagine.
Before deleteing any program first check to see if you have to remove it first,
I made the mistake of deleteing one .BITMAP file  and when I restared my computer it crashed major time I had to preform a complete reinstall of every thing on my system 8)

Hi Garymbuska ,

I wish I could rmember which plane it was !!   I do usually uninstall when that is an option , but may have just deted the aircraft folder ??   I am fairly new to the world of computers and didn't realize deleting could cause big problems .   I have had no major problems of which I am aware , except  that " Abacus " thing on the menu bar .  I'll think twice before downloading anything from Abacus .

Thanks ,

Tell me where you got it.  I use Total Uninstall (free) http://www.geocities.com/ggmartau/tu.html and I will install it and uninstall it and tell you what to delete.  In the meantime look your modules folder for anything named "abacus" (just a guess).

Hello Jim ,

I guess that is your name and was sort of distant from your note ???

Thanks for the nice offer to help .  I suppose I need some sort of memory lesson first !!  I honestly can't recall where I found it , but seems that I was reading a review and it sounded great .   I am big on good views and I seem to want more than just flying a panel around .  I also love virtual passenger cabins and Active Camera .

I just looked in the modules folder and all I could find beginning with 'A " is ablscpt.dll  .  There are lots of those ' things ' there so I guess that download flooded my simulator .  I just got rid of all of those dll things and bet it is much better now .  I am just kidding !!!

I may look through some reviews to see if I can recall which plane it was .  Must be on the Abacus site so shall look there .

Thanks again for your extra nice offer to help .  Feel free to contact me at :
jlrdds@extremeinet.com at any time .

Distant?  Nah, I'm the nicest guy on the web.  How about "Please tell me where you got it ...".

One of my rules is that ANY .exe installation file has to be run under Total Uninstall so I can undo whatever it does.  If you get TI you can re-install the file and then totally uninstall it if you don't like it.

Since you've lost the original installation file and can't find it you're kind of out of luck unless it came with an uninstallation utility or Windows can uninstall it.  Did you check Control Panel/Add-Delete Programs?

BTW, don't delete ablscpt.dll.  It's on my hd and is probably a required file.

Hey Jim ,

When I said you were distant , I meant your name was sort of far from the body of your message and was not sure that was your name .   The Abacus thing is not a big problem and is for registering  the code after paying for the plane .   I won't worry about it .  I just don't like the fact that it was placed there with no obvious way to get rid of it .
I would tell you where I found the plane if I could recall .  I have downloaded so many .

Thanks for the download info for  Total Uninstall .  I do have the zip now .

If it's just in your Windows menu bar but not in your FS menu bar just right click/delete.  But the uninstallation program should have taken care of this.

HI again Jim ,

It is only in my FS2002 Pro menu bar .   I may find out where I got it and which plane someday .  I am headed out in my little RV for a 7-8 day vacation & seems to be the only way I can get away from my beloved Flight Simulator .

Thanks Jim ,

I had the same prob last year and solved it, but I'll need time to try and remember how.  Webb gave a clue, there's a file imbedded in a folder somewhere, all you have to do is delete the file, that's all there is to it.  I'll look thru the FS files tomorrow and maybe will recall which folder it is.  You might also try contacting Abacus, they put it in there, they ought to/had better know how to get it out.

The Abacus thing also struck me as being something that I didn't want in my sim either, so I understand your problem well.

I "believe" that this is what I did to fix this.  It's a little scary deleting files outright, so if you are leery of doing this, either wait for a better or contrary reply here, or call Abacus with the FS modules folder open in front of you.  I have no fear of crappin' around with my own computer, but I certainly do not want to give out incorrect advice either:

Look in the 'modules' folder.  They're all *.dll files in there.  See if there's a file that is OBVIOUSLY Abacus.  Back it up to a floppy for safety, then delete the file.  Run the sim and check the menu bar.

The catch here is that "somehow" I was able to pick out the Abacus .dll file.   I can't remember the name of the file, and I'm not too sure now that it was greatly obvious.  I might recognize the name if I see it again.

You could just check the dates on the files.  All the MS files have the same date.  And you don't need to back it up to a floppy - just create a sub-folder and put it in there.

Hi Apex ,

Thanks for the response .  I didn't see anything
obviously   Abacus   in the modules folder .
I have noticed that many do not care to commnicate via e-mail on this forum and is fine .  I don't mind myself and would send a screenshot of my modules if anyone cares to view them .
It is really not that big a deal , but just wondered where the " thing " is that is keeping it on my menu bar .  I know that I could contact Abacus , but hated to bother them with it .

While I am "  Foruming "  , I  wonder if it is just the fact that I am fairly new to the computer world that makes me dense when it comes to navigating around this Forum ??   I am wondering how one gets to specific topics or pages  .  I would not know how to find my own topic if it moves on down the list and eventually to page 125 or so ??

Thanks ,

Jamie

Hi Jamie. I've installed plenty of Abacus stuff over the years. They are a reputable company & unlike some I could mention their files should do no harm to your PC. An Uninstall program is included with all their software to remove it safely if you wish to do so. As the others suggest I suspect you deleted the aircraft instead of uninstalling it properly. The menu entry might be annoying but it will do no harm. The best way over it would be to install the aircraft again & uninstall it properly. If it's a free trial there might be a problem if the trial period has expired. The best option might be to mail Abacus product support. The only place to get their free software is from the Abacus home site. I've always found it a little difficult to navigate. http://www.abacuspub.com/

Hi Hagar ,
I don't doubt that Abacus is reputable and that I did not uninstall properly  .  It was a 7 day trial , but I decided early on that I did not want the aircraft because it had no  wing views ,  etc.   I honestly cannot recall which plane it was .  I have decided to live with the Abacus  thing on  my menu bar .

I do appreciate your response .  Incidentally , It is the Simviation forum that I am having trouble navigating and guess I just don't understand how it all works .  This is my first experience with a forum and is really a very helpful tool .

Thanks Hagar ,
